It is not going to happen before Golf production moves from Wolfsburg to Puebla.

The Volkswagen Golf offers an extensive range in Europe, giving buyers far more choices than the GTI and R models available in the United States. This includes practical wagon versions along with multiple gasoline, diesel, and plug-in hybrid powertrains, plus manual transmissions on select trims.

VW has sold the eighth-generation Golf in the US solely as front- and all-wheel-drive performance hatches, yet that situation may evolve later this decade. Production is set to relocate from Wolfsburg to Puebla in 2027, a move that raises the possibility of lower-priced Golf variants returning stateside.

VW Group of America CEO Kjell Gruner noted in an interview with Automotive News that producing the model in North America creates chances for additional Golf variants. While specifics were not provided, these trims would probably cost less than the $35,865 GTI and $50,730 R, unless the brand opts to import the top-tier R wagon instead.

VW Is Reviewing Which Golf Versions Fit the Market

Gruner added that any extra Golf models headed to the US would require careful evaluation regarding tariffs. The remark implies the brand would likely avoid the lowest-priced base model and focus on better-equipped versions to maintain margins.

The question then is: What is the tariff from Mexico to the U.S.? A 25 percent tariff for an entry version of the Golf would be difficult.

Shifting Golf Mk8 production to Puebla means the current generation will remain available for years despite its late-2019 launch and 2024 facelift. VW has indicated it might continue offering the car even after the electric Mk9 arrives, expected no earlier than 2030.
