Australia's new car market posted its strongest July result ever, as Chinese manufacturers and Tesla recorded solid performances while Toyota kept a clear lead at the front.

Overall deliveries reached 108,577 units for July 2026, marking a 4.2 per cent rise compared with July 2025.

These figures come from data gathered by CarExpert from the Electric Vehicle Council's monthly report together with the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries VFACTS report obtained separately.

China remains the primary source of new vehicles even with Toyota at the top of the charts, and petrol engines stay the most common choice despite major increases for electric vehicles.

Electrified models including EVs, hybrids and plug-in hybrids made up nearly half the market at 48.4 per cent.

Brands

Toyota led the brands once again and pulled well ahead of second place after being only 243 units clear of BYD in June.

The Japanese brand delivered close to three times the volume of BYD even though its own sales fell 6.0 per cent year on year.

BYD had noted its June result would be hard to match soon, yet it still held a solid gap over third placed Kia.

All non-Chinese brands in the top 10 except Tesla declined year on year, while only one Chinese brand, GWM, recorded a drop.

Kia finished third with 6553 deliveries, down 11.5 per cent year on year. The Seltos fell 67.6 per cent, though a new generation is expected later this year. The Tasman ute managed just 382 units, a 44 per cent decline year on year.

Even though the BT-50 outsold the Tasman by more than two to one, Mazda slipped to fourth. Several models declined, but the updated CX-5 rose slightly to 1836 units, the Mazda 2 reached 257 units and the new Mazda 6e outsold the Tesla Model 3 with 283 units to 134.

Ford fell 12.1 per cent despite the F-150 leading full-size pickups and the Transit van range improving. The Ranger 4x4 rose year on year but the 4x2 version declined, and the ute trailed the HiLux for the month though it leads year to date.

Strong Kona sales were not enough to prevent Hyundai from a 10.4 per cent drop, placing it sixth.

Tesla volumes jumped thanks to the new Model Y L, and the standard Model Y rose 299.1 per cent. After a weak July 2025, Tesla reached 4778 units and finished seventh overall.

Chery, GWM and MG completed the top 10, with Geely in 11th. Its new EX2 ranked as the second best-selling light car with 474 units in its first month.

After Xpeng appeared in VFACTS reports in June, GAC has now begun reporting sales. A few brands including Cadillac, Mahindra and Smart still do not release monthly figures.

Models

The Toyota RAV4 led overall sales in July with its strongest month of the year so far. The full range is now on sale, and almost 40 per cent of July deliveries were plug-in hybrids.

The HiLux has traditionally led 4x2 ute sales but trailed the Ranger in 4x4 volumes. The updated model reversed that in July, outselling the Ranger in 4x4 (4119 versus 3827) and taking second place overall.

Tesla reports the stretched Model Y L separately from the standard Model Y. Even split this way the SUVs ranked among the top sellers. The Model Y L placed fifth and the Model Y sixth. Combined they totalled 4644 units, still behind the RAV4 and HiLux but ahead of the Ranger (4042) and BYD Sealion 7 (2548).

The Model Y L is counted as a large SUV due to its size, as no official FCAI classification exists since Tesla stopped reporting to the industry body in 2024.

The Chery Tiggo 4 narrowly led the Hyundai Kona as the top small SUV and leads year to date as well (15,794 versus 15,228). They finished seventh and eighth overall in July.

Toyota again overtook Ford as the Prado passed the Everest (2082 versus 1697). The Everest leads year to date with 12,830 units against 11,184 Prados.

The top 10 closed with the Geely EX5 on 2034 units, while the Zeekr 7X placed 11th with 1892 units.

No Mitsubishi models reached the top 20, though the Triton and Outlander finished just outside in 21st and 22nd.
