Even the roomiest SUVs with generous third rows cannot truly maximize passenger space. Most options seat only eight total, while nine-passenger models commonly found today include the Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban. In the present market, locating a vehicle with capacity for at least 10 means considering full-size passenger vans, imported minivans, lengthened editions of smaller platforms, or buses - and any need beyond 10 seats restricts choices mainly to buses.

Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards classify a bus as a motor vehicle with motive power, excluding trailers, intended to carry more than 10 persons. Variations often relate to engineering and safety rules for vehicles with Gross Vehicle Weight Ratings under or over 10,000 pounds. Weight considerations may also apply to the largest choices. Certain states require a CDL for vehicles exceeding 26,000 pounds GVWR, and some large buses surpass this threshold. Review local regulations for any state where you plan to drive. Below are five appealing alternatives offering double-digit seating.

Chevrolet Express

Seeking a fresh vehicle with traditional durability? Although some may be surprised it remains available - and it closely resembles the version introduced three decades ago - the 2026 Chevrolet Express offers a solid starting point. Its base price begins at $50,345 including destination, providing 12-passenger seating, air conditioning, and power features as standard. Useful options include current ADAS features like forward collision warning, blind-zone monitoring, and lane departure alerts. The base audio setup features a two-speaker AM/FM radio with optional Bluetooth, while a touchscreen supporting Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Wi-Fi is not included, nor are steering wheel controls.

The Express excels in capability. Built on a robust ladder frame of high-strength steel in 2500 and 3500 series similar to the Silverado HD, the extended-wheelbase version with 15-passenger seating and a 401-horsepower V8 achieves a GVWR of 9,900 pounds along with up to 3,540 pounds of payload.

Those preferring a Professional Grade appearance can select the GMC Savana, which matches the Express closely except for minor styling differences and shares the same starting price.

Mercedes-Benz Sprinter

At the premium end sits the 2026 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter. While the upcoming generation will be even bolder, the current model delivers on its reputation as the upscale choice among full-size passenger vans, particularly the Sprinter Select. It enhances an already extensive standard equipment list with heated driver seat, leather-wrapped steering wheel, upgraded overhead console, and advanced LED headlights featuring adaptive high beams.

Like the Express, the Sprinter comes in 12- and 15-passenger configurations across two wheelbases, yet Mercedes uses a distinct powertrain. The sole engine is a 2.0-liter turbodiesel inline-four offered in two outputs: 170 horsepower with 295 pound-feet or the high-output version at 211 horsepower and 332 pound-feet. Available all-wheel drive further differentiates it from the Chevrolet.

Advanced technology abounds. In addition to numerous safety aids, an optional MBUX system provides a 10.25-inch touchscreen, digital instrument cluster, voice assistant, Wi-Fi, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto support, plus a hotspot. Pricing reflects the luxury positioning, with the base model at $56,930 and the Select at $64,780 before a $2,295 destination fee.

Checker Aerobus

Setting the Chevrolet Express aside, the Checker Aerobus represents a genuine vintage find. This extended version of the classic Checker taxi, originally designed as an airport shuttle or budget limousine, was built from 1962 to 1977. Occasional examples still appear for sale, such as one that fetched $29,425 at a recent Hagerty auction.

Modern conveniences are absent unless added later, yet the Aerobus compensates with distinctive styling reminiscent of the Checker A8 taxi introduced in 1956, scaled up significantly.

Multiple versions existed in sedan and wagon forms stretched by 34.5 or 69 inches. The shorter extension created the six-door Aerocab with three rows, while the longer version yielded an eight-door wagon with four rows seating up to 12 plus luggage space. A reinforced frame and heavy-duty suspension supported the increased demands. One remains active today as a shuttle in Glacier National Park.

Hyundai Staria

Many enthusiasts appreciate vehicles unavailable in their home markets. Hyundai launched the forward-looking Staria compact van in 2021, which would suit this category, yet the company has declined to offer it locally. Importing one provides an 11-seat minivan with striking design. An 11-passenger Kia Carnival shares the platform internationally without the same bold styling.

The Staria utilizes interior space efficiently, delivering 36 inches of legroom and 39 inches of headroom in the fourth row compared with the Tahoe third-row measurements of 34.9 and 38.2 inches despite the Chevy being longer overall. The tradeoff appears in cargo room, where the Tahoe offers 25.5 cubic feet behind the third row while the Staria leaves virtually none behind its rearmost seats.

Powertrain variety is another strength. Buyers may select a 3.5-liter V6 producing 268 horsepower and 244 pound-feet or a 2.2-liter diesel with 175 horsepower and 318 pound-feet. Hyundai continues offering manuals, and the Staria includes one.

AEC Routemaster

The Hyundai Staria would qualify as a bus domestically due to its seating exceeding 10. Why not consider an authentic bus? Premium pre-owned models such as a 2024 Mercedes-Benz Tourrider Lux can approach half a million dollars at $519,000. School buses provide a lower-cost alternative, though they may evoke mixed memories and have seen limited change since 1939.

An iconic choice is the AEC Routemaster. British enthusiasts recognize these enduring double-decker buses that entered London service in 1956, remained in production until 1968, and served regularly through 2005, with the final examples carrying passengers until 2021. Typical versions accommodated 64 to 72 passengers, with 28 to 32 on the lower level and 36 to 40 upstairs.

The Routemasters introduced several innovations including power steering, power-hydraulic brakes, fully automatic transmission, and independent front suspension to the bus sector. Acquisition costs are reasonable, with a pair of 1966 models recently listed near $55,000 each.
