Jerry Wiegert set out in the 1970s to create the ultimate supercar, one that would surpass all rivals in speed and technology no matter the expense or duration required. Over the following twenty years he remained fixated on this goal, and the Vector W8 that resulted became a dramatic tale of American automotive ambition marked by both technical triumph and eventual downfall.

Initial sketches and a 1:5 scale model appeared in 1971. Working alongside Hollywood coachbuilder Lee Brown, Wiegert constructed a running prototype on a Porsche platform that was later designated the W2. This design continued to develop throughout the 1980s and finally entered production in 1990 as the Vector W8, nearly two decades after the first drawings.

Wiegert's aerospace interests shaped more than the company name. The W8 incorporated aircraft-grade suspension parts, wiring, factory fire-suppression equipment, and a body made from carbon fiber and Kevlar. Power came from a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V8 fitted with forged aluminum pistons, a forged crankshaft, and stainless-steel connecting rods, producing a claimed 625 hp and 600 lb-ft of torque. The manufacturer stated the car could accelerate to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds and reach a top speed of 218 mph.

The W8 represented a significant milestone as the only fully American-built supercar of its era, though its path to recognition proved anything but straightforward.

The rise and collapse of the Vector W8

A 1991 Car and Driver evaluation of two early W8 prototypes became legendary for repeated mechanical setbacks. One car suffered transmission failure while the second overheated. After overnight repairs the magazine recorded a 0-60 time matching the factory figure along with a 12.0-second quarter-mile run, placing the Vector alongside the Ferrari F40. Road & Track later echoed this positive assessment.

Tennis champion Andre Agassi purchased a W8 for roughly $400,000, yet the carpet above the exhaust system melted during a drive near his Las Vegas residence. His brother later described the vehicle as a death trap. Agassi returned the car and requested a refund.

Unfavorable publicity combined with persistent financial strain pushed Vector into receivership in 1993 after only 17 customer cars had been completed. Indonesian firm Megatech acquired the company and Wiegert was removed by his own board. In a final effort to retain control he changed the factory locks and posted armed guards, but the courts ruled against him. Megatech, then owner of Lamborghini, soon replaced the W8 with the M12 derived from the Diablo.

Wiegert later regained the Vector name and remaining assets, yet he passed away in 2021 at age 76. Although the W8 never achieved broad commercial success, its dramatic story endured through magazine articles, video-game appearances, and lasting legend. The car embodied one man's vision of a street-legal stealth fighter and remains a seldom-discussed chapter in American automotive history.
