The typical new car in 1970 carried a price tag of $3,543. Adjusted for inflation that equals roughly $31,411. In 2025 the average crossed $50,000 for the first time and recently reached $51,974, even as demand stayed solid. Relative to the inflation-adjusted 1970 figure, this represents a 65.5 percent rise in real terms.

Comparing median household income with average new-car prices over the same span reveals patterns that extend beyond any single factor and point in part to the dominance of trucks and SUVs.

In 1975 the Census Bureau recorded median household income at $11,800, or about $75,901 in today's dollars. The average new-car price that year stood at $4,961, equal to 42 percent of annual income. Using the latest 2024 median of $83,730, today's $51,974 sticker now equals 62 percent of yearly earnings, a 20-point increase that shorter-term income gains are unlikely to close.

Rising Incomes Failed to Ease Car Purchases

Inflation dropped from 9.1 percent in 1975 to 3.6 percent in 1985, yet new-car prices doubled to $11,835 while income rose to $23,620. The share of income needed climbed to 50 percent. Market shifts after 1995 proved more decisive: trucks and SUVs overtook cars and wagons, moving from 40 percent to 69 percent of sales by 2020.

In 1995 average car and truck prices were nearly identical at roughly $17,800, requiring about 52 percent of the $34,080 median income. By 2010 the split favored trucks and SUVs at higher prices, with cars averaging $24,907 and light trucks $32,324. The latter consumed 65.6 percent of the $49,280 median income.

The Flawed Formula and Its Consequences

The longstanding 20/4/10 guideline recommends a 20 percent down payment, a loan no longer than four years, and total transportation costs below 10 percent of monthly income. Recent data show 36.5 percent of buyers taking 73-month or longer loans and nearly 24 percent choosing seven-year terms.

Applying the 20 percent down payment to the current average price requires $10,394. Compact cars, now 6.5 percent of the market, average $27,590 and need only $5,518 down. By the same income-share measure used for 1975, these vehicles now represent 33 percent of annual median earnings, underscoring that smaller sedans and hatchbacks remain notably more attainable than the prevailing truck and SUV mix.
