Toyota Australia has confirmed the LandCruiser Prado and LandCruiser 300 Series will gain a second immobiliser as a genuine accessory from August, responding to record theft rates targeting its vehicles.

The upgrade follows security changes rolled out in Japan during March and earlier anti-theft steps taken in Australia at the start of the year. Local pricing for the accessory has not been released.

Prior announcements covered mid-year updates for the Prado, 300 Series and HiLux, though the HiLux timing stays unconfirmed in this latest statement. Sales and marketing boss John Pappas shared the details with CarExpert in April.

"Protective measures have been added across the range over time, with further enhancements now including an additional immobiliser for the LandCruiser 300, HiLux and Prado models," Mr Pappas said.

"The thefts represent an industry-wide issue involving OEMs, government, industry bodies and police - a complete ecosystem of all parties," he added.

Toyota avoided detailing earlier measures to prevent assisting thieves, referring to them only as advanced safety features.

The upgrades apply solely to new vehicles, with no over-the-air updates offered for existing owners. A physical steering-wheel lock has also been introduced in the genuine accessories range as a further deterrent.

Theft rings targeting Toyota models have been disrupted by police in Victoria and Queensland, with authorities noting the use of tools bought online.

Victoria Police reported in March that key-cloning technology accounted for one in three stolen vehicles, with the LandCruiser, HiLux, RAV4 and Corolla among the most common targets.

"Intelligence estimates suggest as many as 30 cars are stolen daily in Victoria using key cloning," deputy commissioner Bob Hill stated.

Advanced rings have used electronic devices via the OBD port to take control of vehicles, unlocking doors, starting engines and disabling GPS tracking including Toyota's connected service.

Victoria Police recommends fitting an OBD-port blocker to stop thieves connecting cloning tools.

Around 32,000 vehicles were stolen in Victoria during 2025, the highest annual total since 2001.

The Insurance Council of Australia noted Victoria's $243 million in stolen-vehicle claims exceeded the combined total from every other state and territory.
