Plug-in hybrids appear to offer an ideal balance. They deliver battery range for everyday commutes while allowing a switch to conventional fuel when needed. Yet in reality these vehicles can combine the drawbacks of both systems. Consumer Reports recently released its list of the least reliable plug-in hybrids for 2026, and the models highlighted illustrate how added complexity from charging systems and dual powertrains often leads to more problems.

Consumer Reports data shows traditional hybrids experience 15 percent fewer issues than gasoline vehicles alone. In contrast plug-in hybrids and fully electric models together report 80 percent more problems. The extra components including larger batteries, charging equipment, and integrated software seem to be the main culprits rather than hybridization itself. Early plug-in models arrived later than conventional hybrids, and not all have endured. Three vehicles from the list have already been discontinued less than six months after publication: the Jeep Wrangler 4xe, Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe, and Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. The remaining models continue for now, though questions remain about their longevity into 2026.

Jeep Wrangler 4xe

Buyers choose the Wrangler for its distinctive character rather than pure utility. Owners have tolerated quirks like tricky roofs and firm rides under the banner of brand loyalty. Recent concerns proved harder to overlook, however. Multiple recalls addressed risks of vehicle fires and manufacturing debris in the engine. An earlier software update also left some examples inoperable. Stellantis has ended production of the Wrangler 4xe, citing shifting buyer preferences toward simpler powertrains that avoid such complications.

Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe

The Grand Cherokee 4xe brought plug-in capability to a more comfortable family vehicle with added refinement and cargo space. It shared many of the same technical issues as the Wrangler variant, including battery and software concerns. Production has now concluded for the 2026 model year. Shoppers can still select from numerous non-plug-in trims such as the Laredo, Limited, and Summit, along with three-row configurations. Removing the 4xe option simplifies the range considerably.

Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid

The Pacifica Hybrid offered a practical choice for families needing space, sliding doors, and electric range for short trips. Recalls involving more than 40,000 units worldwide highlighted fire risks tied to the high-voltage battery, including the possibility of thermal runaway even when parked. Stellantis has discontinued all its plug-in hybrids for 2026, ending this model as well. The decision leaves other manufacturers to continue competing in the segment while Stellantis steps away entirely.

Ford Escape Plug-In Hybrid

The Escape Plug-In Hybrid remains available in most states despite emissions-related restrictions in six markets. It provides a familiar compact crossover format with seating for five and roughly 37 miles of electric range. A recall addressed battery short-circuit risks that could cause power loss or fire. Despite its appearance on the reliability list the model continues for 2026, offering buyers a mainstream option that balances utility and efficiency.

Mazda CX-90 PHEV

The CX-90 PHEV positions itself as a premium three-row SUV with seating for up to seven and strong performance from its 323-horsepower electrified drivetrain. Early recalls covered electronic faults that could trigger reduced power or stalling. The vehicle has avoided cancellation so far, with multiple trims still offered. Its continued presence gives Mazda time to address the issues noted by Consumer Reports.

Volvo XC60 Recharge

The XC60 Recharge combines family crossover practicality with strong acceleration, delivering 455 horsepower and a quick 0-to-60 time. Production has moved to the United States. Recalls have targeted battery short circuits and regenerative braking software. The model persists alongside other Volvo electrified variants, avoiding the immediate fate of discontinued rivals while buyers weigh its performance against noted reliability concerns.
