License plates have long been part of American life almost since automobiles first appeared. These metal tags often decorate bars, shops, college rooms, and museum displays alike. They represent a mix of liberty and rules, creativity and uniformity, plus clever phrases or humorous quips depending on the chosen message.

In the United States they appear everywhere on roads and beyond. Yet in earlier times plates showed far greater variety in form and style. Shapes, hues, substances, and makers differed widely under local authorities during the first half of the twentieth century. That freewheeling period produced unusual examples, some now valued higher than a typical new vehicle.

Eventually rising vehicle numbers led to the decline of these homemade versions. By 1957 the familiar twelve-by-six-inch format became the accepted national norm.

The inventive approach to early plate making

Plates of some kind appeared on cars in the late 1800s. Initial versions usually came from city or town offices and might consist of a leather piece with attached porcelain numbers. State-level issuance began in 1903 when Massachusetts first required automobile plates. Within roughly two decades every state plus the territories of Alaska and Hawaii had their own requirements.

The 1920s to the early 1950s marked a peak time for distinctive plates. Although state versions grew more alike with factory production, many jurisdictions still varied shapes, dimensions, and materials. Tin, copper, cardboard, and similar substances saw use, each offering different strength and lifespan.

Odd outlines proved popular too. Idaho issued plates resembling its well-known potato in 1928. Kansas and Tennessee supplied versions cut to match their state outlines.

Metal shortages during World War II prompted even odder substitutes. Soybean meal, plastic, wood, and sugarcane fiber replaced metal, as did cardboard and leather.

Standardization ends the freewheeling period

By the middle 1950s nearly all new plates followed the size and shape still used today. The change came from efforts by the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators to create uniformity. This allowed car makers to plan vehicle bodies more easily, especially for recessed fittings and rear lighting.

After October 1957 the varied plates of earlier decades largely vanished from American roads. While some states still permit nonstandard tags on historic cars, creating a custom handmade plate for everyday use remains impractical.

Even under current standards designs keep evolving, and many feel older versions offered greater visual interest than modern ones.
