The aviation world is full of peculiar aircraft nicknames. The stubby McDonnell XF-85 earned the title Goblin for its odd looks, while the oversized Boeing 747 LCF became known as the Dreamlifter. Even the Boeing 737 sometimes goes by Guppy. Yet few monikers carry the dark edge attached to the Beechcraft Bonanza.

The Bonanza might have received a lighter name, perhaps something playful like the Beech Banana. Its title comes from a long-running Western television series, after all. Instead, the sleek single-engine four-seater picked up the far more ominous tag Doctor Killer. Small-plane accidents occur regularly, but the Bonanza stood out because of the number of affluent victims involved.

The Beechcraft Bonanza Receives Unfair Criticism

The label Doctor Killer lacks creativity, though it sometimes expands to fork-tail or V-tail Doctor Killer to highlight the aircraft's distinctive rear design. The Model 35 Bonanza posted a fatal accident rate of 4.90 per 100,000 flight hours through 1952, more than double the rate of the comparable Cessna 195. Affluent buyers such as doctors and lawyers could afford the 1947 price of $7,975, roughly $119,100 today. Many of these new owners possessed limited flying experience and relied mainly on visual flight rules, leaving them unprepared for instrument flight in poor conditions.

The Federal Aviation Administration examined the V-tail during the 1980s and noted occasional structural issues, often tied to operations in bad weather. High-profile crashes reinforced the image. In 1947 a Bonanza went down in poor conditions, killing Oregon Governor Earl Snell along with the secretary of state and senate president. The 1959 accident known as the Day the Music Died claimed Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper, again during adverse weather.

A Misleading Label

Despite the reputation, a 1994 AOPA Air Safety Foundation study found that pilot error caused 73 percent of V-tail crashes, while the aircraft itself contributed in only 15 percent of cases. Beechcraft later added stabilizer reinforcements to address earlier concerns. The model also suffered frequent gear-up landings because of a confusing switch layout. Later versions introduced clearer controls and squat switches that prevented gear retraction while the aircraft sat on the ground.

Well-maintained V-tail examples now sell for $250,000 to $300,000, with older airframes available below $100,000. Prospective owners should budget carefully and focus on solid training before taking the controls.
