Amid recent attention on missions such as Artemis II, many have viewed footage of these impressive liftoffs. Observers often spot an unusual curve in the flight path once the vehicle starts to tilt sideways after the initial climb.

This path is not a standard parabola but resembles a banana curve known as the brachistochrone, chosen because it minimizes fuel use and improves the balance between payload and propellant.

A straight upward shot works fine for brief trips that return to the surface without circling the planet. Wealthy space tourists typically follow this up-and-down route for short weightless periods without entering orbit, classifying the flight as suborbital.

Placing satellites in fixed positions or reaching the International Space Station requires true orbital velocity, where the craft falls continuously around the planet at a speed matching gravitational pull. This demands horizontal motion away from the surface to sustain the loop.

The visible tilt marks the start of a gravity turn maneuver. This technique lets the vehicle harness Earth's pull for added speed without extra propellant burn, angling the descent path to avoid ground impact while building velocity to exit the atmosphere and settle into orbit.

Most missions turn eastward during this phase to gain from planetary spin, which moves at roughly 1,037 miles per hour along the equator. Heading any other way fights this motion and wastes fuel, whereas an eastward gravity turn preserves the existing rotational momentum.

Artemis II lifted off from Kennedy Space Center in Florida partly due to its near-equatorial location, which maximizes the rotational boost. Comparable sites such as Starbase in Texas and China's Xichang center sit at similar latitudes to capture the highest possible speed advantage from Earth's turn.
