Land Rover introduced the Velar nearly a decade ago as its newest Range Rover variant. The model has stayed in its original generation even as it approaches the ten-year mark. A redesigned second generation is expected within six months and will mark a substantial change from today's version according to Autocar.

This upcoming Velar becomes the first Land Rover to use the new modular longitudinal architecture platform. The MLA setup started as an EV-focused design but now also supports hybrid systems.

Fresh Powertrains, New Look

Land Rover previously stated that the initial MLA model will offer full hybrid electric propulsion. This means buyers can expect both hybrid and fully electric versions though U.S. availability for each remains unconfirmed.

The redesign will be among the final Land Rover vehicles shaped by former chief creative officer Gerry McGovern. While the current Velar has seen little change since its 2017 debut the next model will adopt a sleeker car-like profile.

Expect a sharply sloping rear similar to coupe-style SUVs like the BMW X4. Like the Jaguar Type 01 the Velar will omit a traditional rear window and use a camera system instead. The Polestar 4 uses a comparable layout though that vehicle faces a U.S. sales ban.

Details on the MLA platform remain limited but reports point to an 800-volt electrical system. This setup should enable rapid charging speeds comparable to today's leading electric vehicles.

Motor1's Take: The present Velar has felt overlooked by Land Rover with dated styling and ordinary powertrains for its segment. Converting it to an EV and giving it a sedan-like stance sets it apart from other Range Rovers a shift the model has long needed.
