During a special discussion with Paddock Magazine, Paolo Barilla and Nicola Corradi, who handles Media and External Relations at Barilla, describe how one of Italy's most famous family-owned businesses views Formula 1 as a sport that continues to require authentic human touches.

The current paddock functions as a mobile system focused on accuracy, supply chains, and constant performance. Vehicles get built and reassembled under tight deadlines. Engineers attend sessions with computers rather than handwritten notes. Staff travel across regions on a frequent basis, managing with minimal rest as audiences observe every action live.

Even outside the track, activity persists without pause. Production sites stay operational overnight amid events. Testing equipment runs while vehicles remain in action. Discussions extend well past the close of workspaces. Yet within this environment of advanced tools and demands, a delicate aspect persists in Formula 1: personal bonds.

This area is exactly what Barilla targeted upon becoming the series Official Pasta Partner starting in 2025. Initially, the link might have seemed unusual. Recent commercial progress in Formula 1 has come mostly from tech entities, banking groups, high-end labels, and online services. Pasta did not seem the typical fit for the lineup.

For Barilla, Formula 1 serves as more than a promotional venue. It acts as an active testing ground for top performance, intensity, new ideas, and shifting worldwide trends. Paolo Barilla also sees a personal link to the sport.

From Racing Seat to Leadership Role

Well before guiding one of Italy's best-known international firms, Paolo Barilla took part in Formula 1 directly from the driver's position.

Following success in long-distance events and a victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans alongside Porsche in 1985, the Italian took part in Formula 1 races toward the end of the 1980s. Those moments continue to influence his current perspective on the sport, both in business terms and through direct knowledge of the personal and practical demands of top-level racing.

“For us, it is a privilege to become part of a world that represents a benchmark for excellence,” Barilla tells Paddock Magazine. “We are not entering Formula 1 simply for visibility or sponsorship exposure. As a company deeply rooted in its heritage, but constantly looking ahead, Barilla sees Formula 1 as an opportunity both to learn and to bring our own culture and traditions to a global stage.”

Barilla does not aim to transform its identity via Formula 1. It also avoids chasing temporary attention. Instead, the firm regards the championship as a mirror of issues it already handles: steady results amid stress, worldwide coordination, accuracy, collaboration, and ongoing progress.

Within Formula 1, small improvements determine outcomes. A similar outlook now applies to worldwide food manufacturing, where supply operations, environmental efforts, standards management, and buyer needs shift regularly.

“A lightning-fast F1 car and a delicious plate of pasta: what do they have in common?” Paolo Barilla says. “At first, it may not be obvious, but behind both are skilled professionals, passionate and determined, driven by the desire to keep improving.”

The link might seem artistic initially, yet within Formula 1 it holds clear logic. Both fields rely on processes where minor flaws lead to major effects. Both rely on unseen groups whose contributions often go unnoticed. Both operate in highly competitive global settings where expectations keep increasing.

Beyond Standard Sponsorship

Formula 1 now stands as one of the most advanced mobile groups worldwide. Over a campaign lasting close to ten months, numerous individuals shift regularly among nations, accommodations, terminals, and venues. Drivers stand out publicly, yet the sport relies just as much on technicians, technical staff, service teams, press members, planners, supply coordinators, and plant workers handling tasks out of view.

Many spend more hours with coworkers than relatives. This situation increasingly defines daily life in the paddock.

“In this first year of partnership, we have experienced firsthand the excellence and attention to detail that characterize Formula 1,” Nicola Corradi tells Paddock Magazine. “Over the coming years, we look forward to welcoming F1 fans to the table every race weekend, bringing together the thrill of racing and the comfort of a great meal.”

Notably, Barilla's discussions about Formula 1 keep returning to ideas of unity rather than results alone.

“This partnership is an invitation to celebrate meaningful moments together,” Corradi continues, “because we believe that sharing a meal has the power to turn strangers into family.”

Within Formula 1, where timetables stay demanding and rivalry shapes most exchanges, this idea carries particular weight.

The paddock may look appealing from afar, especially at events such as Monaco. Yet under the boats, sponsor gatherings, and service areas lies a setting defined by stress and fatigue.

The Overlooked Tale of “Pasticcino”

One clear example of Barilla's outlook came via its “Tastes Like Family” effort, centered on a lesser-known name from Formula 1 past.

His actual name was Luigi Montanini, though many in the paddock referred to him simply as “Pasticcino.” Well before current service setups turned Formula 1 into a business-focused display, Montanini served as an informal cook for the group during the 1970s. Using basic portable stoves, collapsible surfaces, and pasta supplies, he provided meals to technicians, designers, reporters, and racers moving through Europe on event weekends.

There were no upscale team vehicles. No famous cooks. No structured guest programs. Only racing, and now and then a warm serving of pasta.

What Barilla grasped right away was that the account centered less on meals and more on connection.

At that time, Formula 1 often remained unpredictable and basic in its setup. Team members moved constantly, frequently facing tough conditions while distant from their homes. Pasticcino's dishes provided something uncommon amid the demands of race weekends: a sense of routine.

“Formula 1 has always been a world of rivalry and competition,” Paolo Barilla says. “But beyond that, there is space for friendship. Drivers, mechanics, engineers – they would sit down and share a meal. It was the food that created those moments of connection. A simple plate of pasta made people feel at home, even far from it.”

New Ideas, Worldwide Audiences, and What Lies Ahead

Naturally, a key business element supports Barilla's Formula 1 commitment.

The series' expansion worldwide, especially into North America, the Middle East, and Asia, provides entry to fast-changing buyer regions and shifting daily patterns.

“The idea of entering Formula 1 emerged from internal discussions about innovation and the future of food consumption,” Paolo Barilla explains. “Formula 1 takes place across around twenty countries, including many Asian markets where eating habits and meal structures are very different from those we are traditionally used to. There is a great deal we can learn from these cultures and consumer behaviours.”

This view proves quite telling. Rather than treating Formula 1 only as a way to promote Italian traditions abroad, Barilla also regards the championship as a setting to study how worldwide patterns evolve at home.

“We are living through a period of profound change in society and consumer habits,” Barilla says. “But change should not be something to fear. It should inspire us to innovate. Being part of Formula 1 also means embracing this spirit of continuous evolution and improvement.”

A clear fit exists here with Formula 1, where technical advances occur each season. Barilla recognizes that holding onto roots while pursuing new developments need not conflict. In Formula 1, the two often align.

Monaco may illustrate this balance more than any other stop on the schedule. Technicians continue working through dark hours. Designers still pursue small edges. Team members still remain away for extended periods.

And perhaps this explains why Barilla's entry into Formula 1 feels fitting, since beyond the deals, tools, and business expansion, Formula 1 continues to run on individuals.

And even in the quickest sport around, individuals continue seeking instances that evoke a sense of home.
