Imagine Florida back in the 1970s when the state already had a reputation for unusual schemes. An ambitious ecological plan aimed to build artificial reefs along the eastern coastline but instead produced an underwater landscape of discarded rubber with minimal benefit to sea life. Sinking millions of old tires off Fort Lauderdale may sound extreme yet the organizers believed it offered a practical solution for waste disposal while supporting ocean ecosystems.

Ambitious plans lead to unintended damage

Artificial reefs have existed for centuries though early versions served mainly to boost fishing rather than protect the environment. By the early 1970s local groups including Broward Artificial Reef Incorporated and ocean engineering professor Ray McAllister revived the concept to increase game fish populations east of Fort Lauderdale. With approval from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers the team organized a volunteer fleet of more than one hundred boats alongside the USS Thrush to place over two million tires in bundled groups across the seabed. The project carried support from the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company but results proved disappointing from the start.

Marine organisms largely ignored the tires and the nylon and steel bindings that held the bundles together eventually broke apart. Storms then scattered individual tires across the reef area where they collided with living coral and blocked new growth. The scattered rubber caused ongoing harm to fish populations and existing reef structures.

Long term cleanup faces ongoing challenges

What began as a hopeful disposal method became a persistent problem for coastal waters. Cleanup coordinator William Nuckols described the tires as a constant source of coral destruction. Recovery work between 2007 and 2009 brought in Navy Army and Coast Guard divers who retrieved roughly seventy two thousand tires. State environmental agencies have since removed more than five hundred eighty six thousand tires under a multimillion dollar contract yet experts estimate nearly one million tires will remain until at least 2033.

Similar tire reef attempts in other states also failed. Virginia placed tires offshore only to see a major storm scatter them onto North Carolina beaches. New Jersey scientists tried anchoring tires with concrete but fragments still washed ashore. Although such projects have largely ended the task of restoring affected sites continues across multiple coastal regions.
