Car fans familiar with Corvettes understand that Chevrolet bypassed the 1983 model year in the shift from the C3 generation that wrapped up in 1982 to the C4 generation that began in 1984. In reality a small number of 1983 vehicles were produced as test units and a single example remains on display at the National Corvette Museum. The C4 Corvette ranks as one of my preferred eras of the storied American sports car since examples remain affordable and stand out with their distinctive styling. Over my time covering cars and enjoying them I have driven both early C4 models and late C3 versions. As the sole 1983 model and the first C4 this example feels underdeveloped and GM would have done better to refine it further before release. It simply does not measure up.

Matching the 1984 models that came next this 1983 car uses the sole V8 that GM produced which proved inferior even to the emissions restricted 305 small block the weak Cross-Fire L83 engine carried over from the 1982 C3 cars. Equipped with dual throttle bodies unreliable electronics and abbreviated intake paths to clear the low Corvette hood it delivered a modest 205 horsepower when it managed to run at all. Owners nicknamed it Cease-Fire due to its spotty reliability. Pair that with the flawed four-speed 700R4 gearbox and the ordinary white finish and the result is a car that fails to inspire.

Chevrolet planned the car for 1983 but postponed launch owing to engineering setbacks fresh emissions rules and inconsistent build quality. Given that 1984 Corvettes already feature a firm ride and noisy ill fitting fiberglass panels the 1983 pre production example must have been even more challenging to operate.

Test vehicles tend to drive poorly since they serve as tools for ongoing development. Chevrolet engineers did not perfect the 1983 prototype and the 1984 models carried forward those shortcomings. Though they marked a clear advance over the older C3 generation by modern measures these cars felt crude and demanding. It is striking to consider how much the Corvette has advanced since the early 1980s and how readily GM might have abandoned the effort before it regained its edge in sports car production.

When the powertrain is mismatched the suspension overly firm and the body loosely assembled the strong acceleration and impressive 0.9 g skid pad grip of the C4 lose impact. An incomplete unreliable car demonstrated that the C4 was not prepared and the team hurried to refine the design.

As the starting point for my preferred Corvette generation I am pleased the remaining 1983 car endures yet I have no interest in driving it. It stands preserved as a historical artifact on the museum floor. This item clearly belongs in a museum setting. If given the option I would choose almost any other Corvette instead.

Do not worry the C4 improved over time

Owners and reviewers voiced concerns and the engineers responded with steady updates that enhanced the Corvette. Following the uneven 1984 launch improvements arrived quickly including a revised engine for 1985 and the capable ZF six speed manual that replaced the Doug Nash 4+3 unit in 1989.

The 250 horsepower L98 engine marked a clear gain over the L83 while the 1992 arrival of the 300 horsepower LT1 represented a major advance. Corvette had at last achieved the promise the 1983 car could not deliver. By the close of production the C4 had become a true high performance machine. The addition of the 330 horsepower LT4 at the end of the run in 1996 along with the ZR-1 and its 375 horsepower dual overhead cam LT5 showed it was among the finest sports cars America had created by that point. The sole missing element might have been the V12 powered Corvette under development to rival the Dodge Viper.

In the end the imperfect 1983 prototype paved the way for one of the strongest American engineering achievements. I can overlook its flaws because the team at Bowling Green refused to abandon the car and instead refined it to reveal its true potential. Credit goes to them as the true standouts.
