Finley faced arrest in 2023 after mishandling client classic cars and funds intended for repairs. His shop focused on engine upgrades that replaced original powerplants with contemporary units offering greater output and dependability, per ABC 13. Instead of completing the tasks, he retained the vehicles plus components worth roughly $2 million and nearly $500,000 in prepaid fees. Finley further removed parts from entrusted cars and resold them to other buyers. He relocated the automobiles to remote sites, yet authorities located 24 vehicles in one storage facility, all later returned to owners.

During the December 2025 trial, prosecutors presented statements from 28 of the 72 affected individuals. Each described demands for substantial advance payments followed by extended delays spanning months or years. Authorities noted Finley provided false updates on progress when questioned. The jury reached a guilty verdict within one week. In January 2026, Judge Jeth Jones imposed the 60-year sentence plus an order for nearly $500,000 in victim restitution.

The precise basis for Finley's appeal remains undisclosed. His attorneys submitted the notice on the day of conviction yet have not delivered the initial brief despite several granted extensions.

An appeal might appear unlikely to succeed given the volume of evidence, yet it does not constitute a retrial, as explained by the Department of Justice. The process examines the trial record for legal mistakes by the judge or prosecution. Finley could also pursue a sentence reduction. At age 51, the term likely spans the remainder of his life. While his actions were criminal, other offenses such as fatal shootings in driveway disputes have resulted in sentences as short as 25 years.

Finley's clients may view the punishment as appropriate after losing their classic cars. As Sammy Davis, Jr. observed, one should not commit crimes without accepting the consequences.
