Sedans face declining interest, yet they remain relevant. Although the market has shifted heavily toward SUVs, sales of standard four-door models have shown a modest rise in recent periods. At Lexus, the flagship LS heads toward retirement, while the ES receives a full redesign. The IS lineup shrinks for 2026 but gains several practical enhancements.

The present IS enters its twelfth model year after another mid-cycle refresh, the third overall. Fresh front styling appears modern and integrates smoothly with the existing body lines.

Lexus simplified the range by removing the base IS300 and the top IS500, leaving only the IS350 in F Sport Design and F Sport forms.

The Design trim serves as the entry point tested here. The higher F Sport adds a 2450-dollar premium and includes unique suspension settings, red brake calipers, power lumbar support, four-way headrest adjustments, a heated steering wheel, and distinctive cabin accents. An optional Handling package supplies extra drive modes, adaptive dampers, and a Torsen limited-slip differential on rear-drive versions, while a Technology package brings full LED headlights, front cross-traffic alert, lane-change assist, and Traffic Jam Assist.

With the four-cylinder and V-8 removed, the naturally aspirated V-6 stands alone. Transmission choice varies by drivetrain: rear-drive models receive an eight-speed automatic, while all-wheel-drive cars retain the six-speed unit.

EPA estimates remain close between the two, with rear-drive figures at 19/27 mpg city/highway and all-wheel-drive at 19/26 mpg. These trail turbo four-cylinder competitors such as the Audi S3 at 23/31 mpg and the BMW M235 Gran Coupe at 24/33 mpg. In a 75-mph highway test, the all-wheel-drive IS350 reached 28 mpg.

Performance numbers for this twelve-year-old platform fall short of newer rivals. The V-6 produces 311 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque, yet the zero-to-60-mph run takes 5.6 seconds compared with 4.2 seconds for both the S3 and M235.

On the skidpad the Bridgestone Turanza EL450 all-season tires yield 0.87 g, below the 0.94 g of the M235 and 0.95 g of the S3. Braking from 70 mph requires 165 feet, longer than the Audi at 152 feet and the BMW at 154 feet.

Still, the Lexus offers qualities beyond raw data. The naturally aspirated engine delivers linear throttle response that grows rare. The torque-converter automatic shifts smoothly at low speeds. Although the V-6 lacks turbo low-end torque, it rewards higher revs with a pleasing growl past 4000 rpm. On the road the powertrain feels responsive, with a five-to-60-mph rolling start of 5.9 seconds that nearly matches its zero-to-60 time.

Chassis revisions to steering and suspension keep the IS less sharp than its German counterparts. It provides a superior ride, absorbing most road imperfections while maintaining reasonable body control. Steering effort feels appropriate, though feedback remains limited.

Interior materials and controls now feel improved for 2026. The previous small infotainment screen and touchpad have been replaced by a 12.3-inch touchscreen, matched by a larger instrument display. New toggle switches operate climate functions. All USB ports are Type-C, and a wireless charging pad adds convenience.

With updated ergonomics, the cabin quality stands out through padded surfaces, a comfortable steering wheel, a traditional shift lever, an excellent driving position, and precise switchgear. Minor drawbacks include a roller volume control, lack of a tuning knob, and limited storage. The tight cabin may feel confining to some yet contributes to an intimate driving feel. Supportive front seats offer strong lateral hold, while rear headroom stays limited.

Even after a third update the IS350 does not lead its class, yet it retains strong appeal. Lexus continues to support the model.

VERDICT: Refined and balanced, the IS350 continues its steady course.
