We always welcome news of an engaging automobile becoming more accessible. Although the savings may not prompt an immediate dash to the showroom, the 2026 Subaru WRX brings back the modestly priced Base model, which trims a few amenities yet retains every performance element. Adding to the appeal, notable reductions extend across remaining variants in the range.

What's New for 2026?

Subaru's welcome WRX pricing revisions, which bring costs back near 2024 figures, stem from an earlier upward adjustment. Tariffs imposed in 2024 affected the Japan-sourced WRX, prompting Subaru to raise 2025 prices sharply. Those increases cut sales by 41 percent, leading the brand to reduce its margins on this performance icon and restore the Base version to better suit enthusiasts seeking value. June 2026 WRX sales rose 252 percent versus the prior year, confirming the adjustment worked well.

Beyond the Base, Subaru offers a new limited WRX Series.Yellow edition that expands on the tS with Sunrise Yellow paint and matte-black wheels. For maximum value and driving pleasure, however, the Base model stands out.

The WRX Base opens at $33,690, which is $1500 less than the Premium. This version now includes 18-inch alloy wheels and keyless entry, delivering more content than earlier Base cars. Standard equipment also features an 11.6-inch upright infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate control, cloth upholstery, LED headlights, and leather on the steering wheel plus shift knob.

Choosing the entry-level WRX means giving up little. Premium versions add heated front seats, rear USB outlets, heated mirrors, LED fog lamps, and a body-color trunk spoiler. Forgoing those items frees funds for suspension upgrades or, as our testing showed, improved brake pads and fluid.

Powertrain details stay consistent across trims. A turbocharged 2.4-liter flat-four produces 271 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed manual on most models except the CVT-only GT. Our earlier test of a 2022 WRX Limited reached 60 mph in 5.5 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds at 101 mph.

WRX on the Track

Oulton Park presents an engaging layout, though it remains less famous than other English circuits. British Touring Car Championship followers will know this 2.7-mile, 17-turn course filled with varied corners, straights, dips, and blind rises. The base WRX carries less speed than a touring car, keeping our risk of contact with barriers quite low.

The WRX proves simple to drive on track in stock form, thanks to summer performance tires that deliver roughly 0.95 g on the skidpad. The suspension tuning keeps body motion in check around Oulton Park, whether negotiating the long left at Island Bend or the tight right-left at Hislops. A sharp compression at Deer Leap before the start line is absorbed well, with enough travel to avoid harsh bottoming.

Shifting through the gears feels straightforward. The six-speed offers longer throws yet remains accurate enough to avoid missed changes, as most of the circuit can be covered in third or fourth. The clutch takeup is soft but predictable and handled our aggressive launches without issue. With 271 horsepower, there was plenty of chance to experiment with throttle timing and its effect on corner exits.

After several short sessions totaling a dozen laps, two limitations appeared. The engine sound was hard to monitor because track helmets with radios blocked most noise, forcing frequent glances at the tachometer to avoid the limiter.

Brakes also showed limits. They delivered strong stops and solid pedal feel early on, yet pads and fluid reached high temperatures by midday, leaving two days of road use ahead. Track-focused owners should plan on upgraded pads and fluid before extended sessions.

WRX on the Road

With brakes still feeling less than ideal after track use, we began a two-day drive from Oulton Park west into Wales then east toward Goodwood for the Festival of Speed. Even after hard laps the brakes performed adequately, though we allowed extra space around sheep and farm vehicles on the narrow, hedge-bordered B-roads.

Steering feels light in effort and feedback. That trait suited the track but proved welcome on public roads, where reduced effort helps limit fatigue over distance. The firm suspension transmits some road imperfections yet absorbs larger bumps without harshness. Tall windows aid visibility, which helps when piloting left-hand-drive vehicles on the left side of the road.

The main complaint remains the radio. Subaru infotainment continues to boot slowly, requiring several minutes after startup before phone connection and navigation become available. The delay affects all trims equally except newer models such as the Outback that use an updated interface.

We found no need for the extra features on higher trims. As noted earlier, directing the $1500 difference toward brake upgrades and a couple of meals makes strong sense. We remain supporters of more affordable routes to an engaging performance car.
