I maintain a curious habit. Its origin escapes me, yet I tally Subaru Outback wagons near my home. Only resident-owned examples count; passing vehicles draw no notice. Other Subaru variants hold no appeal, even though my area features plenty. The activity simply fills time during dog walks.

The focus on Outbacks lacks clear cause. Several years back, their presence stood out in my 84-home community, now totaling nine wagons, including two households with matching pairs.

This represents roughly 5 percent local share, since most households run two cars, far exceeding national Outback sales rates. If that share applied nationwide in 2025, Subaru would have sold around 835,000 units instead of the actual 157,716.

As a close watcher of nearby Outbacks, the 2026 Trailseeker caught me off guard. Its body stretches into a contemporary wagon form with added clearance, suggesting it might serve as the updated Outback. Meanwhile the new Outback adopts standard SUV lines and drops wagon traits.

This raises questions about Subaru strategy.

Has the brand dropped the classic Outback wagon niche built across decades? That model pioneered the raised, light-off-road wagon concept later adopted elsewhere. The Trailseeker adds EV power and shares a Toyota counterpart, the bZ Woodland, with Subaru styling both nearly identical exteriors.

How might devoted Outback wagon buyers view this shift? Would my neighbors choose the Trailseeker? Could this end my odd counting routine?

Seeking answers, we secured a 2026 Trailseeker and 2026 Outback, then spoke with locals for perspective. Our first visit targeted nearby residents.

Kim and Scott drive a 2025 Outback, the final wagon-style version. They enjoy it after switching from a Tiguan. We arrived with badges covered and described the cars as upcoming Subaru options.

They selected the Trailseeker as the likely next Outback. Revealing the badges prompted light laughter, yet they accepted the SUV change without regret.

Cargo space drew them more than shape. Kim packs gear around a central cooler for trips after checking rivals with measurements. The Outback fit her needs best.

Another neighbor mentioned his wife plans to replace her older Outback wagon but will skip the new model due to styling preferences.

We still needed input from a Subaru sales expert before judging the models ourselves.

How They Measure Up

Driving both showed unexpected similarities despite different powertrains. Our Touring trims matched closely in features and cost, the Trailseeker at 48700 dollars and the Outback at 49840 dollars.

Each included leather seats, heated steering wheels, ventilated fronts, heated rears, and full safety aids. The Outback added a sunroof while the Trailseeker offered a panoramic roof. Audio systems featured 11 or 12 Harman Kardon speakers respectively.

Dimensions align closely at 191.7 and 190.8 inches. Rear space favors the Trailseeker due to its longer wheelbase. Both hold 11 carry-ons behind the seats; folded, the Outback takes 29 suitcases and the Trailseeker 27.

The Outback interior feels more upscale with soft nappa leather and refined stitching. The Trailseeker uses shared Toyota components including a larger 14-inch screen and simpler trim.

On the Road

On-road manners proved similar overall. Both handle competently with accurate steering and comfortable rides, the Outback slightly firmer. Neither excites drivers much.

Steering feels accurate enough and rides stay comfortable, allowing easy highway travel without drama. Excitement remains absent.

Acceleration sets them apart. The Outback turbo four reaches 60 mph in 6.2 seconds. The Trailseeker dual motors deliver 375 horsepower and hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds.

Skidpad grip matches at 0.81 g. Braking from 70 mph takes 174 feet for the Outback and 181 for the Trailseeker.

Ask the Man Who Sells Them

Performance details mattered less than buyer reactions. We consulted a veteran Subaru dealer with extensive Outback sales experience.

He predicted current wagon owners would skip the new SUV Outback for a different audience. The Trailseeker would also attract separate buyers as an EV, though both should sell steadily.

This settled the matter. The Trailseeker does not inherit the Outback identity; Subaru has simply retired the original wagon formula.

The classic Outback wagon spanned three decades. Future counts in my neighborhood will end, so I may shift attention to Foresters instead.
