Subaru is working on a WRX with a manual gearbox used in the previous-generation WRX STI.
A hot BRZ based on the STI Sport Type RA is also in the works.

The manual gearbox might be declining, yet certain manufacturers continue to support the manual transmission. Beyond BMW's M models and Mazda's Miata preserving the six-speed manual, Subaru is also dedicating efforts to vehicles with three pedals. The Japanese automaker conducted a press event at Fuji Speedway during an endurance race to showcase three upcoming cars with manual transmissions.

Per local reports, Chief Technology Officer Tetsuro Fujinuki stated Subaru's commitment: "We aim to create cars that can be enjoyed more casually." From left to right, a new WRX model is coming featuring the TY85 transmission from prior STI versions. It is uncertain if this indicates a complete WRX STI, but the model seems influenced by the WRX STI Sport Prototype displayed earlier this year.

The central vehicle is a new BRZ variant, following the STI Sport Type RA (Record Attempt) limited edition released in Japan last year. Subaru produced just 300 units sold via lottery. It is now creating a successor emphasizing reduced weight and driving pleasure over increased power, so a more powerful engine may not be included.

Hot Hatch or Just Hatch?

The rightmost car in the main image is the most intriguing. This hatchback with manual transmission is positioned as a new "affordable base car." Subaru is evaluating materials and reducing standard features to lower costs. It is unknown if the final version will relate to the Performance-B STI Concept shown at last year's Japan Mobility Show.

The Tokyo concept was essentially a WRX STI hot hatch. However, the new model might be a fresh design prioritizing affordability. Additional information could come soon, since Subaru intends to release all three vehicles progressively by the end of next year.

Remember, Subaru has established a Sports Vehicle Planning Office for such projects. Earlier this year, the company previewed a raised BRZ rally car with all-wheel drive and turbo engine, though a production road version is uncertain.

Motor1's Take: While this news is thrilling, expectations should remain moderate. Many or all of these vehicles may be Japan-only. Subaru often releases limited editions exclusively for the domestic market.

A WRX STI with manual would be ideal for the US market, and an affordable manual hatchback could address a market need. Currently, all three models seem targeted at Japan only. This also applies to the rally BRZ, developed for the All Japan Rally Championship.
