Water in the tank is a serious problem, and debris can block injectors and fuel filters, impairing their operation. Fuel stored incorrectly also degrades, losing its combustibility and causing engine misfires.

Experienced technicians can readily identify air filter clogs or injector faults, but confirming bad gas proves more challenging. The telltale signs - including difficult starts, complete failure to start, and worse mileage on top of the earlier issues - closely mimic symptoms of worn-out parts.

When can you point to the fuel as the cause? Symptoms emerging right after a fill-up suggest the station dispensed poor-quality gas, particularly if fellow drivers report identical problems from the same pump. Confirmation comes if performance improves after refueling elsewhere. Ruling those out demands more thorough checks.

Steps to Diagnose and Resolve Bad Fuel Issues

Begin with a visual check of the fuel's appearance. Fresh gasoline appears clear or lightly golden, but cloudiness or a deep amber hue indicates contamination. An off-putting odor raises alarms too. To detect water, let a sample rest briefly then tilt it - water sinks to the bottom, separating clearly. Obtaining that sample from the tank poses difficulties, however.

Siphoning worked simply on older models, but today's cars feature anti-siphon safeguards. Commercial siphon kits exist, yet they fail on some vehicles. Alternatives involve disconnecting a fuel line and running the pump, a task that varies by model, system, and complexity - ideal for those with mechanical expertise. Once verified, drain the tank fully. A drain plug simplifies the process to empty and refill. Absent that, revert to siphoning or fuel line methods. Persistent problems? Inspect the gas cap - deteriorated seals might allow moisture intrusion.
