The host employs a see-through fire piston, much like an oversized syringe, to show compression ignition at work, the fundamental idea that powers diesel motors. The segment opens with details on the device, a transparent piston that reaches a 25 to 1 compression ratio, close to the levels found in production diesel units.

With air and the heat from compression already present, the final element needed for burning is suitable fuel. Notably, the choice of char cloth echoes Rudolf Diesel's initial trials with powdered coal that shaped today's diesel technology. Following that approach, the presenter later switches to actual diesel fuel in the test.

Early tries with char cloth fell short, yet a smaller piston for greater pressure combined with a sledgehammer brought success near the four-minute point. The first diesel run missed the desired slow-motion detail, but a follow-up attempt clearly captured the ignition sequence. A visible flame front, much like the char-cloth result, appears around the 5:53 mark.

Understanding diesel fuel

Diesel engines rely on compression ignition while gasoline engines use spark ignition largely because of differences in the fuels. Diesel resists vaporizing at room temperature and carries a higher flash point than gasoline, so a line of spilled diesel resists lighting far more than gasoline does, as shown in MythBusters tests.

Diesel remains combustible, however, and will burn once sufficient heat is supplied. Its auto-ignition temperature, the point at which it lights without an outside spark, sits lower than that of gasoline.

Thus a volume of hot, compressed air alone can set diesel alight, matching the events in the Warped video. Gasoline could theoretically self-ignite under extreme heat, yet that is not how gasoline engines function. In fact, unwanted auto-ignition can damage gasoline engines, which is why high-compression gasoline designs call for high-octane fuel.

Some efforts have explored gasoline in compression setups, such as Mazda's Skyactiv technology. Unlike pure diesel compression ignition, Mazda's SPCCI system blends both methods by using a spark plug to trigger a compression event.
