Some might argue they require a refined, efficient powertrain, a calm and hushed cabin, and the main goal of safely carrying passengers across multiple rows. Yet in America, our passions often override careful planning. We enjoy twisting solid ideas into their opposites, resulting in contradictory machines that feel thrilling nonetheless.

Rather than fitting our most polished engines into premium SUVs, we scan other segments and select the wildest motors from our boldest muscle cars. This approach draws from tales of the GMC Typhoon outpacing sports cars and the Lamborghini LM002 with its wild V12, though the focus here rests on high-output V8s that define this niche.

To honor the headline, certain choices were required. European makers produce strong performance SUVs, some with V8s, yet the concept centers on engines traceable directly to classic muscle cars. We also avoided repeating older variants of the same engine family to prevent overcrowding the list with multiple Jeep Grand Cherokees.

Cadillac Escalade-V

The Escalade-V stands as a strong current example of this trend. It is large and powerful, with Cadillac selecting a motor from its muscle car lineup. Beneath the hood sits GM's supercharged 6.2-liter V8 known as the Gen-V LT4. This small-block first appeared in 2015 in the C7 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, where it delivered 650 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque, proving challenging even for that sports car to manage.

The LT4 also appeared in the Camaro ZL1 and Cadillac CTS-V, but the Escalade-V version aligns closely with the CT5-V Blackwing, which produces 668 hp. Engineers adjusted cooling and induction, fitted different manifolds, and used a larger 2.65-liter supercharger instead of the Blackwing's 1.7-liter unit. Dodge Durango SRT Hellcat

Introduced in 2021, it carries the updated 710-hp, 645 lb-ft Hellcat V8. This 6.2-liter engine ranks among top American muscle motors despite debuting around a decade ago in the Challenger Hellcat. It has since powered the Charger, Ram TRX, Demon, Durango, and another Stellantis SUV.

The Durango SRT Hellcat pairs this power with an eight-speed automatic and optional 20-inch Pirelli P Zero tires, achieving 0-60 mph in 3.6 seconds and a 12-second quarter-mile. It remains available, with a 2027 model coming soon.

Jeep Grand Cherokee Trackhawk

The other Hellcat-powered Stellantis SUV is the Trackhawk. Far from subtle, it places serious performance hardware inside a Grand Cherokee. It arrived earlier than the prior two SUVs, in 2018, and gained strong attention for combining luxury comfort with drag-strip capability.

It uses the same 6.2-liter supercharged Hellcat V8, though the earlier model produced 707 hp and 645 lb-ft. In testing, a 2018 Trackhawk reached 60 mph in 3.5 seconds and covered the quarter-mile in 12 seconds, matching or beating the later Durango Hellcat.

Upgrades included a stronger eight-speed ZF transmission, reinforced driveline components, stiffer suspension, and yellow brake calipers. Launched near 90000 dollars, production ended in 2021.

Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392

The Wrangler Rubicon 392 offers less extreme output than prior entries but compensates with playful character. While most off-road Jeeps use milder engines, this model installs a 392-cubic-inch naturally aspirated V8. The idea feels fitting for a hot-rod approach and remains hard to resist.

The 392-cubic-inch Hemi equals 6.4 liters and produces 470 hp and 470 lb-ft without a supercharger. The same engine family appears in Challenger and Charger 392 Scat Pack models and earlier Gen-III Hemi vehicles.

Chevrolet Trailblazer SS

In the mid-2000s, Chevy assigned racer John Heinricy and Corvette engineer Tom Wallace to develop a high-performance Trailblazer. Their involvement signaled more than a simple engine swap on the GMT platform.

Chrysler Aspen

To keep the selection varied, this list includes the lesser-known Chrysler Aspen. During the SUV boom, many brands added models, and Chrysler responded with the full-size Aspen.

The name referenced an earlier compact Dodge Aspen from the late 1970s. The 2007 Aspen was essentially a dressed-up Durango. Buyers could choose a 4.7-liter V8 with 235 hp or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 with 335 hp, an engine also used in the contemporary Charger R/T.
