Scotland-based electric vehicle specialist Munro intends to construct a production plant in Britain starting in 2027. The site will cater to industrial customers in areas including mining, defense, and construction sectors.

CEO Avinash Rugoobur informed the Financial Times that the factory is designed around local customer needs, eventually reaching output levels of thousands of vehicles each year.

He noted that the firm's compact operations and the custom needs of its niche clients render domestic manufacturing economically sound, even with elevated energy and workforce expenses in the UK.

Founded in 2018, Munro initially focused on electrifying older Land Rover models and later introduced the Series M, tailored for rugged off-road and industrial duties.

Currently producing dozens of vehicles yearly in Scotland, the company expects to increase this to hundreds in the coming year.

In conjunction with the factory plans, Munro appointed Rugoobur as chief executive and Tim Holbrow as chief financial officer to target what it sees as a £35 billion market opportunity in industrial electric vehicles.

The business suggested it could seek collaborations if expanding to multiple facilities.

This development comes amid UK government ambitions for 1.3 million vehicles produced annually by 2035, against current projections of around 824,000 units this year from industry forecasts.

Attempts to draw Chinese manufacturers to Britain have largely failed, as firms like BYD opt for locations in Spain and Hungary.

SAIC-owned MG recently revealed plans for an investment of about €200 million in a new European plant in Spain, with capacity for up to 120,000 vehicles per year.

This follows the cancellation of plans by Japan Automatic Transmission Company Ltd (Jatco), a Nissan subsidiary, to manufacture powertrains for battery electric vehicles in the UK.

The move comes after Nissan, holding a 75% stake in Jatco, scaled back its global battery EV initiatives due to softening demand, including in the US following the withdrawal of purchase incentives last September.
