McLaren revealed its hybrid flagship in early prototype guise at the Paris Motor Show to celebrate two decades since the legendary F1 hypercar debut. Competing against emerging hybrid rivals from Porsche and Ferrari proved challenging for the newer marque, yet McLaren produced a 903-horsepower carbon monocoque with sophisticated active aerodynamics and a quarter-mile sprint in the high nine-second range.

The flowing, curved silhouette of this potent machine came from renowned designer Frank Stephenson, who drew cues from the natural world during development. Elements of biomimicry entered the P1 through a Caribbean sailfish observed while traveling.

Specifically the species istiophorus platypterus ranks as the swiftest creature in water, reaching speeds near 68 miles per hour. Its elongated shape moves efficiently through liquid, and the fish can retract its large dorsal fin to accelerate further. Specimens reach lengths of 11 feet and weights approaching 1,500 pounds, underscoring the feat of such velocity.

Stephenson noticed one mounted at his resort and appreciated its contours. The property manager shared details of the capture and expressed satisfaction at landing such a rapid fish. On the return journey Stephenson acquired his own sailfish, arranged for preservation and delivery to the Woking facility for fluid dynamics testing, and later displayed it in his workspace.

It proved fitting to view daily the creature that shaped his signature creation, resulting in the P1.

Stephenson's specimen

In a 2014 BBC discussion Stephenson explained sending the fish to McLaren aerodynamics specialists for precise laser mapping to decode natural hydrodynamic efficiencies. The scales of sailfish produce small vortex patterns that form an air layer around the body, lowering drag in water. Stephenson incorporated a synthetic version of this surface texture on the P1 engine air intakes to improve airflow volume. The car's 727-horsepower twin-turbo V8 benefits greatly from optimized breathing.

Scans also revealed paired raised ridges positioned ahead of the tail that reduce turbulence around the rear fin for better propulsion. Stephenson replicated these forms on the P1 mirror stalks to calm airflow before the glass, lowering wind noise and buffeting with strong results.

Stephenson noted additional natural influence from a sprinting cheetah when shaping the P1. He aimed for an organic profile that wraps tightly around key mechanical elements, much like skin drawn over muscle. Every surface of the vehicle prioritizes performance.
