It is winter, signaling offseason for many drivers. Here in Florida, it simply means fleece-lined shorts at the track. However, colder weather often keeps others from track sessions, which is far from ideal.

Still, productive tasks remain, such as car maintenance, cleaning, or delaying those chores - all time-consuming endeavors. Add one more item to that last-minute list: bailout practice.

Bailouts are maneuvers we all fear but seldom rehearse, despite their potential to be lifesaving in emergencies.

Leading racing series enforce strict bailout standards, requiring drivers to exit vehicles within set times. Tests simulate competition conditions with full gear and belts intact.

In prominent series like IMSA, protocols extend to unconventional exits. GT3 and GT4 drivers must prove competence bailing out via driver- or passenger-side doors.

Such training rarely reaches club racing and almost never track days or time trials. To address this, we organized a spontaneous bailout challenge at the recent SCCA Time Trials Nationals at NCM Motorsports Park.

Our approach lacked rigorous science. Participants started with engines running and cars in gear. On signal, they stopped the vehicle, secured it, and exited rapidly. Timing ended when both feet hit the ground clear of the car. Though informal, results yielded valuable insights.

Lesson 1. A clear plan ensures effective bailouts. While youth, athleticism, and flexibility aid speed, planning proved the top factor for smooth, quick escapes.

Dave Melton demonstrated this in his stock Miata. Top down, he unbuckled, engaged the handbrake, opened the door, and stood - clocking 3.76 seconds.

He repeated with the top up and improved. Asked how, he explained: "I planned it. I adapted the successful top-down sequence, anticipating issues like the top edge catching my helmet. It felt slower but was faster."

Lesson 2. Practice builds proficiency. Some competitors prepared; others tested raw. "I'm embarrassed I've never practiced," admitted Mark Pilson. "This gives me a baseline."

His caged Mustang featured race seats and harnesses; he wore full gear. His debut run faltered when the sternum strap tangled, costing seconds. Now, he recognizes exit pitfalls.

Lesson 3. Safety gear withstands fires but complicates exits. Street-clothed drivers in stock setups escaped fastest. Equipped racers faced extra steps prone to snags.

Richard Sawicki lost nearly 5 seconds to a jammed window net in his Miata. Test gear issues at home, not mid-crisis.

Let this experiment motivate winter drills - even in a basic Miata with OEM belts. Use the skill for trophy grabs, but remember: simplicity turns chaotic under stress.
