Porsche keeps advancing electrification across its range yet has set a firm boundary for its next supercar. The company is creating a new mid-engined model positioned above the 911 and will not offer a fully electric variant. CEO Michael Leiters stated there will be no battery electric vehicle on that platform because demand does not exist in this segment.

The stance stands out from a maker that already sells the Taycan and plans electric versions of the Macan and Cayenne. The 718 Boxster and Cayman will also arrive next year without combustion engines. Still Porsche sees a clear gap between selling electric cars to everyday buyers and persuading supercar customers to abandon engines entirely. Customer preferences will guide this project instead of a full shift to battery power.

The platform offers flexibility. It will accept internal combustion engines along with standard hybrids and plug-in hybrids so the team can match the powertrain to the car's character. A pure battery layout is not included.

The Powertrain Stays Open Yet Will Feature An Engine

This approach leaves room for a lighter combustion sports car or a more advanced electrified version with extra performance. Porsche has not locked in the final setup but wants the freedom to center the flagship on an engine rather than a large battery pack.

The position arrives while many makers invest heavily in electric performance. Porsche is not leaving EVs behind but refuses to push them into a segment where buyers still value engine sound response and character. The choice also highlights that electrification will not follow one path for every model since the brand has already ruled out an electric 911.

Claiming no demand does not mean zero buyers exist for an electric Porsche supercar. It means the company sees insufficient interest to develop one on this platform. That distinction matters as the high end performance market continues to shift.

For the moment Porsche is counting on gasoline power with hybrid support where useful. In an era filled with electric performance announcements this choice stands out in the Mission S story.

Other Makers Also Report Weak Demand For Electric Supercars

Porsche is not the only brand questioning electric power in the top tier. Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann has called EVs an expensive hobby and said the market and customers are not ready. The Italian firm dropped plans for a pure electric version of its 2 plus 2 Lanzador and will instead build it as a hybrid.

Pagani faced the same issue. The boutique maker explored an electric Utopia for years but dropped the idea after dealers and customers showed no interest.

Rimac Delivered Only 71 Neveras Against A Target Of 150

A recent update from Mate Rimac adds another example of the hurdles facing electric supercars and hypercars. Just 71 buyers took the Nevera far below the original plan of 150 units. The shortfall occurred despite impressive specifications and shows that extreme acceleration and advanced technology alone may not convince wealthy buyers to purchase a high priced performance car without an engine.

These brands face the same reality. Creating an electric supercar is possible yet finding enough customers willing to purchase one remains difficult. For now the traditional draw of combustion engines still holds strong at the peak of the performance market. Until that changes makers may hesitate before swapping engine sound for silent electric drive.
