Porsche's 962 prototype ranks among the brand's most famous racing cars apart from the 911 itself. Its strong record through the 1980s and into the early 1990s turned it into one of the top prototypes for competition, an era that closed with victory at the 1994 24 Hours of Le Mans. Yet the machine that celebrated with confetti that day was not a standard Porsche 962, though it shared deep roots. Without several key factors falling into place, it might never have tasted success in France.

The 962 began as Porsche's entry into the Prototype class in America. The 956, the team's prior prototype racer, carried restrictions that blocked it from U.S. events. Facing a tight schedule, Porsche engineers led by Norbert Singer built 12 or 13 cars by hand in three months. The 962 first appeared at the 24 Hours of Daytona in 1984 with Mario and Michael Andretti. They took pole and led early before mechanical troubles ended their run. The car later improved and collected wins, including under Jochen Dauer.

Dauer's Vision

Dauer, a racer who had driven the 962 with his own squad Jochen Dauer Racing or Dauer Sportwagen, planned to turn the 962 into a road car. Such conversions happened now and then, with road cars shaping race machines and sometimes the reverse. Dauer stopped prototype racing in 1991 and bought several 962C cars to start his GT-style road project.

At the same time, 1991 Group C rule shifts pushed the 962 out of series as engine rules tightened and the category wound down by 1993. The new GT1 class let the ACO welcome GT-styled cars for events in Europe and America. Porsche lacked a ready GT entry. Singer noted in an interview that the 911 did not suit the rules. Yet Dauer had unveiled a finished Dauer 962 LM at the Frankfurt show, opening a possible path to competition.

Persuasion Leads to Le Mans Success

Singer held a key talk with Alain Bertout, then Le Mans technical director, about letting Dauer's car enter. Bertout called the plan against the spirit of the rules, which aimed for road cars turned into racers rather than the opposite path. Future GT1 cars followed the expected flow, such as the McLaren F1 or rarer cases like the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR and later Porsche GT1. No prior example matched the 962's full cycle from race car to road car and back.

Singer convinced Bertout anyway. Bertout allowed one race that year only, then planned to close the rule. The Dauer 962 would not return.

One Race, One Win

The Dauer 962 debuted and finished its only Le Mans in 1994. A transmission failure for the leading Toyota let the Dauer entry, driven by Hurley Haywood, Yannick Dalmas and Mauro Baldi, take the win. Its sister car placed third.

Entry hinged on plans to build enough cars, though the 1994 and 1995 FIA GT rules read the same. Teams could race once while promising production, then deliver the cars later. Dauer fell short of the 25-car target by 1995 and could not return. Porsche then assigned Singer to create its own GT car, leading to the 911 GT1 that debuted in 1996 and won Le Mans overall four years after the Dauer 962.
