Porsche will not introduce a fully electric version of its 911 sports car in the coming years, according to CEO Michael Leiters.

The 911 remains one of the most recognizable sports cars in the world thanks to its rear-mounted flat-six petrol engine. It still offers a manual transmission option and gained its first hybrid powertrain during 2024.

Earlier statements from Porsche suggested a gradual shift toward electrification that would eventually include a battery-electric 911, yet slowing demand for electric vehicles has prompted a change in direction.

“We will continue to invest in electric mobility, but a 911 will not become electric,” Mr Leiters stated in remarks translated from German.

“Its future viability must be ensured through combustion engines and hybrid technology.”

The brand had already ruled out plug-in hybrid power for the 911 and has restored internal-combustion engines for the next-generation 718 Boxster and Cayman models after previously planning electric-only versions.

The current 911 hybrid places an electric motor inside the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission to supplement the output of its 3.6-litre flat-six engine.

Mr Leiters spoke at an event organized by German publication Auto Motor und Sport, with his comments reflecting Porsche’s wider pullback from aggressive electric-vehicle targets that began with the Taycan sedan and wagon.

“With the Taycan, we were pioneers in electromobility,” Mr Leiters said, noting that the 2019 global debut arrived too soon.

European reports indicate the Taycan nameplate could be discontinued.

“Porsche remains open to all technologies. Porsche was a pioneer in e-mobility; the Taycan was a flagship project and an outstanding product. But the timing wasn’t ideal; we were apparently too fast with e-mobility.”

Last month the Taycan posted the lowest sales volume among Porsche models in Australia, recording just seven deliveries and matching the Panamera.

The company made the Macan SUV electric-only worldwide in 2025 and eliminated combustion-engine variants entirely.

That decision contributed to a 10 per cent drop in global sales during 2025, prompting former CEO Oliver Blume to describe the approach as unsustainable.

Porsche has also abandoned plans for an electric-only three-row SUV codenamed K1 and will now offer the vehicle with hybrid and combustion powertrains instead.
