Reigning Formula One champion Lando Norris marked McLaren's first triumph of the year in Hungary on Sunday, while Mercedes driver Kimi Antonelli widened his championship margin to 50 points after a cautious performance.

Red Bull's Max Verstappen took second place, finishing 15.080 seconds behind the British driver, and Antonelli came third after a potential McLaren one-two finish ended when Oscar Piastri retired due to a gearbox issue 14 laps from the close at the Hungaroring.

Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, Antonelli's nearest title challenger, crossed the line fourth on track but was demoted to fifth behind teammate Charles Leclerc following a five-second post-race penalty for exceeding the pitlane speed limit during a third stop under virtual safety car conditions.

"My pace today was probably some of the best pace I've ever had," said Norris, who heads into the August break in strong form. "The car was beautiful to drive and I felt very confident, so a great race."

"I'm just happy to be back and see the number one again," he added.

Russell seventh after difficult start

Isack Hadjar finished sixth for Red Bull.

Mercedes driver George Russell ended seventh after a poor getaway that left him 19th and stayed third overall but 59 points adrift of his 19-year-old Italian teammate.

"I am past the point of disappointment now. If I continue to be disappointed with everything that goes on, I will just be disappointed every day of the week," commented Russell.

Racing Bulls placed Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad eighth and 10th, with Audi's Nico Hulkenberg ninth between them.

In the constructors' standings, Mercedes' advantage over Ferrari narrowed to 72 points from 73 after 11 of a possible 23 rounds following Malaysia's addition to the schedule, confirmed Sunday.

The win from pole position marked Norris's 12th career victory and his second consecutive success in Hungary, though it might have belonged to Piastri after the Australian assumed the lead on the first lap from third on the grid.

Piastri led after the initial pitstops and completed his second stop ahead of Norris as McLaren aimed to block Hamilton from taking the lead via an undercut.

His prospects suffered when contact with backmarker Carlos Sainz's Williams while lapping the Spaniard cost enough time for Norris, who remained out longer, to pit and emerge ahead. The champion then increased the tempo and pulled clear.

"Obviously getting taken out by a backmarker is never really one of the things you think can go wrong. But I was proven wrong. Then obviously the gearbox, so not the easiest of days," said Piastri.

Pitstop penalty hurts Hamilton

Piastri's retirement brought out a virtual safety car, prompting Norris to pit from the front and the Ferrari pair from second and fifth, while Verstappen and Antonelli stayed out in the strategy that proved correct.

The low-cost pitstop proved costly for Hamilton, the seven-time champion incurring the penalty after exceeding the limit by 0.1 kph. It was his second penalty of the weekend after a three-place grid drop for impeding Piastri in qualifying.

"I didn't expect to be on the podium today. But we worked hard for it," said Verstappen, who lost position to Hamilton after the first pitstop but regained it with a decisive overtake a lap later and finished 3.6 seconds ahead of Antonelli.

"I saw the opportunity. It was my only one. I just went for it. We're good on the brakes, so that helped, but it was all under control," said the four-time world champion.

Antonelli had started seventh after a three-place grid penalty yet completed a day of damage limitation better than anticipated.

"It was really hard to overtake so we had to do something with strategy," said the Italian. "Initially we tried to go for the one stop but then they told me the tyre was too much on the limit, so we stopped.

"With the Virtual Safety Car the two Ferraris boxed. I knew it would be very hard because I was on hards, they were on softs, but luckily we were able to keep them behind."
