BMW is preparing to launch the next-generation X5 after final calibration tests at its Spartanburg plant. The new SUV will feature five distinct powertrain options.

In a first for the model the X5 lineup will include five drive systems. Choices range from 48V mild-hybrid petrol and diesel versions to a plug-in hybrid a fully electric iX5 and a hydrogen-powered variant due in 2028.

The electric iX5 60 xDrive currently leads the range. It produces 578 hp with BMW sixth-generation eDrive technology along with 800V architecture and the largest battery pack ever used in a BMW EV. The focus is on strong range and performance.

Further ahead the iX5 Hydrogen will highlight BMW alternative zero-emission strategy. Its advanced fuel-cell technology and efficient tank layout aim to deliver practical use without trade-offs.

All versions rest on a new Dynamic Performance Control system that adjusts power braking and steering more rapidly than before. This should result in sharper and more responsive handling across the board.

The next-generation X5 will also include ADAS features at level 2 automation when it arrives.

At launch the X5 will face competition from the updated Audi Q7 and similar rivals.
