Ned Jarrett, a competitor from NASCAR's rugged formative period, passed away at age 93 last week. His steady composure and strong sense of fair play earned him the moniker Gentleman Ned, yet the Hall of Famer's accomplishments behind the wheel and at the microphone might never have happened without writing a bad check for his opening Grand National Series machine.

Jarrett spent his early years on the family's 300-acre farm in Catawba County, North Carolina. Like many local farmers, his father ran a sawmill for extra income. As a young teenager Ned handled bookkeeping duties at the mill, though his ambitions pointed elsewhere. He developed a passion for dirt-track competition in childhood and became deeply involved once construction started on nearby Hickory Motor Speedway in 1950.

At age 19 Jarrett made his debut at the track in 1952, only to face a serious talk with his father afterward. The elder Jarrett worried that racing would make it hard for his son to earn respect, given the sport's links to bootlegging at the time. In a 2007 interview with the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, Jarrett recalled the discussion.

Most drivers back then carried reputations as either bootleggers or reckless daredevils, he explained. His own family stayed clear of that life, so he understood his father's concerns and agreed to stop driving.

A bounced check opened the door to top-level competition

Just weeks later Jarrett returned to the track. His partner John Lentz fell ill and could not race their shared 1939 Ford coupe. Jarrett swapped shirts in the dimly lit infield at Hickory, took the wheel, and finished second. News of the substitution reached his father, who reconsidered and allowed his son to continue. Jarrett captured the 1955 track title at Hickory, breaking Ralph Earnhardt's run of five championships in seven seasons.

After claiming the 1957 and 1958 NASCAR Sportsman Division crowns, Jarrett still struggled to advance in the Grand National Series, now known as the Cup Series. He concluded that stronger equipment was essential. In 1959 he located a proven 1957 Ford previously driven by future Hall of Famer Junior Johnson, yet lacked the funds to buy it.

Jarrett wrote a $2,000 check for the car anyway after the bank had closed. He planned to win two Grand National events that weekend, one 108-mile race in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, and a 100-mile event at the Southern States Fairgrounds in Charlotte, North Carolina. The pair of victories would pay $1,900, leaving him to cover the final $100 before the check cleared. The plan succeeded. Jarrett recorded his first two Grand National wins and moved to full-time competition in 1960.

Jarrett rose to legendary status and created a lasting NASCAR family legacy

Jarrett's ascent through the Grand National ranks was swift. He captured his first championship in 1961 with just one victory while posting an average eighth-place finish across 52 events. A second title followed in 1965, after which he retired abruptly midway through the next season. At age 34 he stepped away following a serious back injury and Ford's temporary exit from stock-car racing. He remains the only Cup Series driver to retire while holding the championship.

Jarrett returned to the sport in 1978 as a radio announcer for MRN. Fans remember his long television partnership with CBS through the 1980s and 1990s alongside Ken Squier. From the booth he watched his son Dale Jarrett win the 1999 Cup title. Both father and son entered the NASCAR Hall of Fame, in 2011 and 2014 respectively.

Modern corporate NASCAR stands far removed from its early outlaw roots, yet figures such as Jarrett keep alive the independent spirit that once defined the sport.
