Chinese-owned British marque MG has shared two teaser images of an upcoming electric hatchback, widely expected to launch as the MG 2 at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in Britain next month.

The red-themed images came with an announcement that global design chief Jozef Kaban will present two concept vehicles at the UK event on July 9, 2026.

One is described as a design study, while the second is a confirmed B-segment electric car slated for the UK market in 2027, where it will face rivals including the BYD Atto 1, Mini Cooper Electric and Kia EV2.

MG Motor Australia has not yet indicated if the model will reach local showrooms, where it could challenge the Atto 1 as the nation's most affordable electric vehicle starting from $23,990 before on-road costs.

It would also go head-to-head with the Geely EX2 electric hatch, already the top-selling model in China and due in Australia by the close of 2026.

MG has hinted at plans for a vehicle smaller than the MG 3, its current entry-level model measuring 4113mm. This would place it well below the MG 4 Urban electric hatch at 4395mm long.

"Many brands are exploring this space right now, focusing on B-segment or slightly smaller cars around four metres with that appealing €20,000 price point," MG Motor UK's head of product and planning, David Allison, told Auto Express in 2024.

"If anyone is positioned to deliver it, MG should be there. Success will come from balancing range, size and price," he added.

Allison also noted the model could introduce the MG 2 nameplate as the logical next step after the MG 3.

Although the B-segment holds less weight in Australia than in Europe, where such cars made up just 3.0 per cent of May 2026 sales, the MG 2 could still boost MG Motor Australia's strong growth. The brand rose 18.4 per cent year-on-year in May, driven by the MG ZS SUV and placing tenth overall.
