MG's final model officially offered in the United States was the 1980 MGB, which left the market feeling dated and somewhat out of step. Its rubber bumpers appeared awkward beside the chrome of earlier editions, its acceleration was modest, and its ride height evoked the MGB Dakar. That setup, frankly, might have proven entertaining.

In Europe, MG persisted within the Rover group, producing vehicles that could have appealed to American buyers with a fondness for British cars, though none crossed the ocean. The MG ZT 260, for example, featured a Ford Mustang-sourced 4.6-liter V-8, rear-wheel drive, and a manual gearbox, which might have drawn attention beyond traditional enthusiasts.

In the American context, MG was remembered for its small open sports cars that often left oil marks and demanded regular upkeep. Caring for one resembled tending to an aging pet prone to mishaps: plenty of affection paired with constant attention.

Today, MG belongs to Chinese firm SAIC and has evolved into a maker of modern, efficient electric vehicles. The MG4 crossover available in Britain earns praise for its value and lively character in classic British style, despite its overseas production. The Cyberster roadster carries an unusual name yet offers a folding top and close to 500 horsepower.

At the Goodwood Festival of Speed, MG introduced two fresh models, one of which stands out for its appeal. The larger Cyber crossover EV resembles a refined Ford Mach-E and could succeed if its final version retains the flowing lines. Even more intriguing is the spirited MG GO! hatchback. The exclamation mark belongs to MG as part of the official name.

Designed in hot-hatch form, the GO! arrives amid renewed interest in the segment, as seen with the Renault 5 Turbo 3E stirring interest among North American observers. Beneath its show-focused aero elements lies a practical hatchback likely to carry an accessible price similar to the MG4.

The prospects for a Chinese-built hatch wearing a British nameplate in the U.S. remain uncertain, though an unexpected parallel exists. BMW revived the Mini brand a quarter-century ago and achieved strong results. The MG GO! might serve as a viable competitor to Mini within Britain.

Even without an imminent MG return to America, a 2027 visit to the Goodwood Festival of Speed could offer the chance to drive a lively compact EV. While these current MG models avoid oil leaks or classic electrical quirks, it remains satisfying to see the Morris Garages legacy continue in fresh form.
