Mercedes-AMG is ending production of the A45 S with an expensive final model.

The expected outcome has arrived. Mercedes is discontinuing the A45 S following the introduction of this generation of the performance hatch in mid-2019. Ahead of the compact rocket departing for good, a Final Edition commemorates the conclusion with numerous visual and aerodynamic enhancements that set it apart. It bears a close resemblance to the Limited Edition released a few years back, yet avoids the John Deere-style graphics.

The A45 S Final Edition distinguishes itself through Mountain Grey Magno paint with a matte effect from the Manufaktur selection, combined with black door handles and matte 19-inch wheels. The brake calipers appear in black, matching the rear badging. The dark theme continues on the side mirror caps and quad exhaust outlets.

Yellow exterior highlights and a silver chrome fuel filler cap add contrast, while prominent "45 S" emblems underscore that this is no ordinary A-Class. Mercedes also equips the AMG Aerodynamics Package, which brings a bolder front splitter and an enlarged rear spoiler. The A45 S farewell edition further includes front canards and a high-gloss black diffuser.

The cabin looks almost the same as the Limited Edition referenced earlier, incorporating the yellow exterior accents inside. Eye-catching "45 S" logos are stitched into the front seats, and the center console carries a "45 S Final Edition" plaque to mark its final status. Aluminum trim, synthetic leather upholstery, black AMG door sill panels, and a Nappa leather-wrapped steering wheel are included as standard.

No alterations appear under the hood, where the AMG A45 S Final Edition retains the most powerful four-cylinder engine fitted to a production vehicle. It delivers 416 hp and 369 lb-ft (500 Nm), allowing a 0 to 62 mph (100 km/h) run in 3.9 seconds and a top speed limited to 168 mph (270 km/h).

The "M139" engine is also used in the discontinued AMG C63, where the turbocharged 2.0-liter unit sits longitudinally and produces 469 hp. As with the standard AMG A45 S, the Final Edition routes power to all four wheels via an eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission featuring variable torque distribution to the rear axle.

Mercedes prices the Final Edition at £67,965 in the UK, while the milder A35 stays available for £48,030. The company is preparing a successor to the A-Class, though it remains uncertain if an AMG version with a combustion engine will follow. Stricter emissions rules make that unlikely. The upcoming AMG CLA 45 will be electric only.

Motor1's Take: The A45 S Final Edition adds another mark against the hot hatch segment. Speculation suggested Mercedes would retire the car due to the forthcoming Euro 7 emissions rules, yet that was never verified. Whatever the reason for its exit, it is unfortunate to watch the selection of available hot hatches in Europe shrink further.

At least the BMW M135 xDrive remains, as do the Volkswagen Golf GTI and Golf R along with their Cupra Leon equivalents. The A35 can be added to that group since it persists. Those open to electric choices have several alternatives, such as the Alpine A290, Abarth 500e, and Cupra Born VZ.
