Mercedes launched the 35 PS in 1900, marking the brand's official debut and introducing the world to what would become a legendary name. This arrival came just 14 years after Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler independently created the first automobiles in 1886.

The 35 PS quickly influenced automobile development for years to come, establishing standards still visible in vehicles today. It addressed shortcomings in early motorized carriages and responded to requests from entrepreneur Emil Jellinek, who sought a capable and secure car following Wilhelm Bauer's tragic crash during the 1900 Nice Race Week.

Wilhelm Maybach and his engineers created a model that departed from carriage-style designs. Built for both competition and everyday touring, it featured a potent four-cylinder engine, honeycomb radiator, low center of gravity, and extended wheelbase, marking clear advances in automotive layout.

Delivered to Jellinek that same year, the car excelled at the 1901 Nice Race Week by winning the Nice-Salon-Nice event and the Nice-La Turbie hill climb. Its engineering foundations endured, helping establish the modern automotive age.

Drivetrain advances still influence current vehicles

The powertrain stood out as a major achievement. Engine designer Josef Brauner produced a 5.9-liter inline-four that generated 34 horsepower, or 35 PS, at 950 rpm. This output proved sufficient for strong performances across Nice's demanding races and rallies.

Power alone was insufficient without dependability, so cooling posed a key hurdle in early motoring. Maybach introduced a fresh honeycomb radiator that kept the engine performing well within safe temperatures during long runs, enabling competitive results. The 35 PS used only 9 liters of coolant initially and later 7 liters, versus the usual 18 liters. While grilles have advanced since then, Maybach's core ideas persist in contemporary designs.

The honeycomb layout began as a reliability measure yet grew into a signature brand element. Vertical radiators became standard for many years, and similar grille patterns appear in today's Mercedes-Benz lineup.

Additional 35 PS features proved equally impactful

Beyond the radiator and engine, the 35 PS brought several other notable changes. It included an angled steering column and a foot-operated clutch, modest adjustments that greatly improved driver ergonomics and remain standard today.

The chassis design also broke new ground by moving away from adapted carriage frames that limited comfort and balance. Instead, it used a low center of gravity, wider track, and longer wheelbase, elements that form the basis for many current vehicles.

Elements from this 1900 Mercedes still appear in new models such as the GLC, which incorporates the honeycomb radiator theme. Core ideas around stability, safety, and comfort continue to guide design, with a low center of gravity valued especially in performance cars. Before the 35 PS, cars were largely motorized carriages, but this model shifted the entire approach.
