Nearly a decade has passed since McLaren launched the 720S at the Geneva Motor Show back in March 2017. Faster versions such as the 765LT and the 750S facelift followed, together with many limited editions based on the same platform and engine. On Thursday at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren introduced what it calls the definitive and final evolution of this supercar family. Time will tell if production truly ends with this car.

McLaren has revived the High Sport name previously seen on the rare MP4-12C and MSO HS models. The new car is named 788HS, with the number denoting the V8 output in PS. Along with extra power, the 788HS features an extensive aerodynamics package, a dedicated chassis calibration and a titanium exhaust claimed to deliver a more dramatic note. Production is limited to 100 coupes and 100 spiders for global buyers.

777 horsepower is a good amount

The twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 now produces 777 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. That represents a gain of 37 horsepower over the 750S and 22 horsepower more than the 765LT. Engine mounts are calibrated specifically for the 788HS to improve driver connection while preserving comfort on longer drives. McLaren states the car reaches 60 mph in 2.8 seconds, slightly slower than the 750S due to added aero drag, yet it covers 0 to 124 mph in 7.0 seconds, a few tenths quicker. Top speed remains 205 mph, matching the 765LT.

Stopping power comes from carbon-ceramic brakes derived from the Senna, fitted with six-piston forged aluminum front calipers that include integrated cooling. The hydraulic suspension receives HS-specific tuning, and the front ride height is lowered by 0.2 inch compared with the 750S. Body control, precision and responsiveness are all improved. Center-lock wheels appear for the first time on this model range, with an optional super-lightweight set available.

The quad-exit titanium exhaust is louder at start-up and more intense throughout the rev range. McLaren says its induction and exhaust sound symposer technologies create an immersive soundtrack for occupants. With an 8,500-rpm redline, expectations for the soundtrack remain high.

More downforce and more wing

The front end features an S-duct in the hood fed by a new center inlet in the bumper. Larger air intakes sit behind a more prominent splitter with additional flics ahead of the wheel arches, while the side skirts are more aggressive. The rear bumper echoes the 765LT design, but the lower diffuser is new and inspired by Formula 1.

A large active rear wing defines the HS model. It offers adjustable angles, and the louvered mounting panel aids cooling and airflow. Overall downforce rises 10 percent compared with the 765LT. All aerodynamic parts are carbon fiber, and the car weighs 2,789 pounds dry, 26 pounds lighter than a 750S though 80 pounds heavier than a 765LT. Power-to-weight reaches 614 horsepower per tonne, the best in the series.

Optional contrasting stripes highlight the front S-duct, and new wheel designs add visual appeal. Coupes receive a roof scoop, and exposed carbon-fiber bodywork is offered for the first time. MSO will handle extensive customization requests.

The cabin features a unique upholstery perforation pattern, a carbon-fiber center console and numerous 788HS badges plus a numbered dedication plaque. Press images show carbon-fiber bucket seats first seen in the Senna, though more comfort-oriented options are expected to be available.

Pricing remains undisclosed, yet demand is expected to exceed supply quickly. McLaren chief commercial officer Henrik Wilhelmsmeyer noted that the 788HS was created to deliver a visceral driving experience through its blend of performance, sound, dynamics and exclusivity. He described it as the ultimate expression of the supercar line that began with the 720S and the third model to carry the HS designation, serving as a fitting finale.

If this is truly the last car in the series, a successor should arrive before long. A reveal around 2027 appears likely, and the next model is expected to incorporate the W1 hybrid V8 powertrain.
