Mazda CX-5 Project Manager highlights dissatisfaction with throttle response in rival hybrid vehicles.

Mazda has promoted its upcoming Skyactiv-Z engine along with the related in-house hybrid powertrain for some time. The system is scheduled to debut near the end of 2027 in the redesigned CX-5, featuring an all-new 2.5-liter inline-four gasoline engine as the core of the company's own hybrid setup.

During this period Mazda has evaluated electrified powertrains from other manufacturers and identified a notable shortcoming. CX-5 Project Manager Koichiro Yamaguchi notes that many benchmarked hybrids exhibit delayed throttle response. Although he avoided naming specific brands or models, the executive leading the third-generation SUV is committed to preventing any such lag in Mazda's hybrid design during acceleration.

'I have tried so many different hybrid systems from other brands, but none of them satisfied me, so I decided to make sure we have this unique Mazda hybrid system that will satisfy me. I think a big point is compared to your accelerator throttle input, how the powertrain reacts to that acceleration, whether that acceleration response is comfortable or uncomfortable - I think that's the big point of judging the hybrid system for me.'

Yamaguchi explained through a translator to Australia's Drive magazine that Mazda's new hybrid powertrain built around the Skyactiv-Z engine seeks to balance efficiency with strong performance. He noted ongoing difficulties with low-rpm output from the gasoline engine yet emphasized that the electric motor will offset these limitations. The outcome, he stated, will combine engaging driving dynamics with the fuel economy expected in the CX-5 class.

Mazda's new combustion engine is being engineered to satisfy Euro 7 rules as well as EPA Tier 4 requirements. It will debut in vehicles for Europe and the United States before expanding to additional markets. The company has pledged greater thermal efficiency and a broader operating range than the Skyactiv-G and Skyactiv-X units it will succeed.

Pursuit of efficiency will not reduce performance levels. Mazda has indicated that adapting current engines for tougher emissions rules could cut power by up to 30 percent. The new Skyactiv-Z is intended to meet stricter standards while preserving output, offering strong results in both areas.

Although the CX-5 will launch Mazda's new electrified powertrain, the engine and hybrid technology are expected to appear in additional models. Insights from Skyactiv-Z development will also inform work on the company's larger inline-six engines used in rear-wheel-drive SUVs.
