MapQuest has updated its mobile app to highlight equipment used for tracking license plates across U.S. roadways. The fresh Surveillance Layer places reported camera and plate-reader positions alongside the traffic updates and incident alerts that drivers routinely review ahead of trips.

The option became available in mid-October 2026 and supports hardware from multiple makers.

Users who activate the layer see a map that identifies the specific system monitoring each road segment instead of showing only a basic alert symbol.

Reported Camera Locations

Enabling the layer requires only a few steps. Drivers select Map Options in the MapQuest app and switch on Surveillance just as they would activate traffic or incident layers, after which camera icons appear along the displayed route.

The information for these icons comes from user reports. MapQuest depends on drivers to note equipment they observe rather than drawing from one official database. This approach means the map should not be viewed as definitive.

An unmarked road segment does not guarantee the absence of monitoring. It simply indicates that no user has submitted a report for that area yet, and fresh units are installed more quickly than crowdsourced entries can reflect.

Devices may also be relocated, replaced, or removed, and the data collection does not refresh instantly. MapQuest presents the layer as a record of known positions rather than a current or exhaustive list of every camera in operation nationwide.

Several Camera Systems Listed

Although Flock Safety receives frequent attention, the layer identifies gear from several established manufacturers. The roster includes Motorola Solutions Vigilant, Genetec, Axis Communications, Axon, Leonardo ELSAG, Neology, Rekor, PlateSmart, Ubicquia, Verkada, and additional outdoor surveillance units.

Flock systems record more than plate numbers alone. The firm notes that its cameras capture plates along with vehicle traits such as make, model, color, and visible accessories like bike racks, trailers, or toolboxes, and it confirms the setup avoids biometric details or facial recognition.

This difference matters for drivers who want to know what information is collected when passing a flagged spot. A Flock unit creates a broader vehicle profile, whereas other systems on the list differ in the data they gather and how it is retained or distributed.

Whether a marker appears or not does not alter whether a camera actually records a vehicle. The Surveillance Layer serves mainly as an awareness aid for roadside monitoring and does not assure that any shown route lacks cameras.
