Although fuel prices in Australia climbed to notable highs earlier this year, hybrid sales have not seen the sharp increases recorded by plug-in hybrids or electric vehicles.

According to Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries data, 104,864 hybrids were delivered to Australian buyers in the first half of 2026, representing an 11.9 percent rise compared with the same period in 2025.

By comparison, plug-in hybrid volumes surged 111.9 percent to 54,256 units, while electric vehicle sales advanced 119.8 percent to 103,843 units.

Declines at Toyota and Lexus limited overall hybrid expansion.

Brands

Toyota continues to lead the hybrid segment with 44,122 deliveries through June 2026, a 20.2 percent decline equivalent to 11,160 fewer units than the prior year.

Hyundai narrowed the gap by posting a 60.8 percent gain of 8,324 units year to date.

Kia recorded even stronger expansion, climbing 139.1 percent to 10,168 units and displacing GWM from third place.

GWM occupies fourth position with 7,226 deliveries, up 29.3 percent, followed by Honda at 4,840 units (up 33.6 percent) and MG at 3,797 units (up 41.9 percent).

Lexus slipped from fourth to seventh after a 26.8 percent drop to 3,913 units, while Subaru advanced to eighth place with 3,594 deliveries, a 247.9 percent increase.

Chery completed the top 10 with 2,537 units after introducing its first hybrids late last year, and Nissan rose 12.5 percent to 2,524 units.

Newcomer KGM recorded 104 hybrid sales, Maserati delivered 16 hybrids, Chevrolet sold two Corvette E-Rays, and Renault registered one Symbioz hybrid.

Models

The Toyota RAV4 leads hybrid sales with 14,894 deliveries; remaining RAV4 volume came from the new plug-in hybrid variant.

In the first half of 2025, eight of the ten best-selling hybrids came from Toyota Motor Corporation and two from Hyundai. This year GWM and Subaru each placed one model in the top 10 alongside three from the Hyundai Motor Group.

The Hyundai Tucson and Kona performed strongly, claiming second and third positions after ranking fourth and fifth last year.
