Plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs) offer a strong fit for busy family routines.

They deliver electric power for everyday local trips such as school runs, commutes, playdates and soothing drives for infants, while the fuel tank provides reliable backup for longer journeys like family holidays without extra planning.

If your household driving pattern matches many others, electric power covers most term-time use and fuel powers holiday trips.

The typical Australian family covers around 40km daily. PHEV electric ranges differ widely, which affects how often charging is needed in family schedules.

Charging every night versus every few days matters when days are already packed with young children (even with a home charger available).

With these factors in mind, here is a ranked list of the 10 PHEVs that deliver the longest battery-only range suitable for families.

Extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) are also included. These models use a combustion engine solely to recharge the battery rather than power the wheels directly, yet they can still be plugged in like standard PHEVs.

1. GWM Haval H6 GT Ultra Hi4 PHEV AWD (183km)

The GWM Haval H6 GT Ultra Hi4 AWD mid-size SUV provides an impressive 183km battery range under the NEDC test cycle. This covers at least four days of typical Australian family driving before recharging, and possibly a full week of school runs.

GWM states that a full battery plus full fuel tank yields a total range of 1000-1183km, reducing the need for fuel stops during family road trips.

The five-seat GWM Haval H6 GT offers a 392-litre boot, smaller than some rivals yet large enough for a twin pram with two young children.

Three child seats fit well in the rear, with space for a 182cm driver ahead of rear-facing seats or taller drivers with forward-facing restraints.

It holds a five-star ANCAP rating, with 88 per cent scores for both adult and child protection, and includes seven airbags as standard.

2. Forthing Luxury Range Extender Hybrid (170km)

The Luxury EREV version of the mid-size SUV, previously known as the Taikon 5, claims 170km of battery range on the WLTP cycle, second-highest here. Its combined electric and petrol range is 937km, the lowest on the list yet still sufficient.

Most families would manage at least four days of driving without charging, suiting average school and commute needs.

It provides top-tether anchors for all three rear seats and ISOFIX points for the outer two. Rear space suits adults with good headroom and legroom.

The 480L boot matches competitors and accommodates a twin pram for families with small children.

ANCAP assessment is pending, though it carries six airbags including side curtains for both rows.

3. Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid Ultimate AWD (170km)

As an affordable seven-seat PHEV, the Chery Tiggo 9 Super Hybrid large SUV delivers 170km battery range (NEDC), allowing several days of local driving between charges, plus a 1250km combined range for extended trips.

ISOFIX anchors sit in the outboard second-row seats and top-tether points on all three second-row seats, supporting three child seats across. The third row lacks child-seat hardware, limiting it to three seats total.

With all seven seats in use, boot space is 148L; with only the first two rows, it reaches 819L to the ceiling, ideal for family luggage on road trips.

ANCAP rating is pending. It includes 10 airbags as standard, though coverage stops at the second row with none in the third.

4. Leapmotor C10 Hybrid EV (170km)

Suited to taller families, the Leapmotor C10 Hybrid EV (EREV) offers ample space for three child seats in the rear and legroom for a 186cm driver ahead of forward- or rear-facing seats.

A double pram fits in the 546L boot, as does a weekly shop of 10 bags.

Its 170km (NEDC) battery range places it fourth, supporting four days of local and commute driving, while combined range reaches 1150km.

Seven airbags come standard and it holds a five-star ANCAP rating with 87 per cent for child protection and 89 per cent for adults.

5. Omoda 9 SHS Virtue AWD (169km)

The Omoda 9 large five-seat SUV provides 169km (NEDC) battery range for three days between charges and 1100km combined range.

Hardware supports three child seats across the second row with ISOFIX on the outer seats and top-tether anchors on all three.

The 660L boot easily holds a double pram and scooters.

Eight airbags are standard and it has a five-star ANCAP rating with 87 per cent child and 90 per cent adult protection scores.

6. Jaecoo J8 SHS Summit AWD (169km)

The Jaecoo J8, another large seven-seat SUV without third-row airbags, awaits ANCAP assessment.

Compared with the more affordable Chery Tiggo 9, it offers 1000km combined range and 169km (NEDC) battery range, sufficient for term-time and holiday use.

Three top-tether anchors and two ISOFIX points in the second row allow three child seats, though testing remains pending.

As a five-seater it provides 738L boot space; with seven seats, 200L remains behind the third row for a single pram.

7. Toyota RAV4 PHEV XSE 2WD (154km)

The Toyota RAV4 remains a family favourite with 154km (NEDC) battery range and 1059km combined range. Most households achieve several days of local driving between charges and solid distance on road trips.

Three child seats fit across the second row, with room for a 186cm driver ahead of rear-facing seats or taller drivers with forward-facing ones.

A twin pram fits comfortably in the 672L boot.

The latest model lacks ANCAP testing yet includes eight airbags with side curtains for both rows.

8. BYD Sealion 8 Dynamic/Premium AWD (152km)

With 152km (NEDC) battery range and 1017km combined range, the Sealion 8 large SUV handles family demands well, supporting two or three days locally and one or two days on longer trips.

It is the only seven-seater here that suits large young families, with top-tether anchors in all five rear seats and ISOFIX points on the outboard second-row and both third-row seats.

Five child seats install comfortably, though an empty second-row seat aids third-row access. Legroom allows a 182cm driver with forward-facing third-row seats and rear-facing second-row seats, or taller drivers with forward-facing second-row seats.

It is the sole seven-seater with third-row airbags, though ANCAP rating is pending.

A twin pram and large shop fit in the 960L boot with two rows in use, or a single pram fits in the 270L behind the rearmost seats.

9. BYD Sealion 6 Dynamic Extended Range (140km)

The Sealion 6 Dynamic Extended Range delivers 140km (NEDC) battery range, allowing families with home or work chargers a few days between charges. Combined range reaches 1250km, matching the Chery Tiggo 9.

Three child seats fit across the second row with legroom for a 184cm driver ahead of rear-facing seats or taller drivers with forward-facing ones.

A twin pram with wheels removed fits in the 425L boot.

It holds a five-star ANCAP rating with 86 per cent child and 88 per cent adult protection, plus seven airbags standard.

10. Geely Starray EM-i Inspire Extended Range (136km)

The Geely Starray EM-i Inspire Extended Range medium SUV closes the list with 136km (WLTP) battery range.

This still supports several days between charges for most families, and the 996km combined range covers a full driving day.

Three child seats fit tightly across the second row, so verify fitment first. Legroom suits a 186cm driver ahead of rear-facing seats or taller drivers with forward-facing restraints.

The 528L boot holds a double pram comfortably.

It carries a five-star ANCAP rating with 90 per cent adult and 87 per cent child protection scores, plus seven airbags standard.
