Ten speeds. Two of Detroit's biggest competitors. A transmission meant to revolutionize the industry instead sparked numerous class-action lawsuits, occupying lawyers for years. Roughly a decade after collaborating on a six-speed front-wheel-drive automatic, Ford and GM joined forces once more. In April 2013, they formalized a partnership to create new nine- and 10-speed automatics for cars, crossovers, SUVs, and trucks.

The objective was clear: develop a unit that boosted fuel economy and helped both automakers meet stricter federal standards. Ford led development of the longitudinal rear-wheel-drive 10-speed, while GM handled the nine-speed (9T50) transaxle for front-wheel-drive applications. This produced two transmissions with identical core structures but distinct software, controls, and certain internal parts.

Ford named its variant the 10R80, and GM calls its the Hydra-Matic 10L80/10L90. GM's version first appeared in the late-2016 Chevrolet Camaro ZL1, while Ford's 10R80 premiered in the 2017 F-150, marking the debut of a 10-speed automatic in a pickup truck. How Ford's and GM's 10-Speed Transmissions Diverge

Per Automotive News reporting on the 2013 deal, Ford chief engineer Craig Renneker outlined the approach: maintain identical hardware across both companies' versions. Still, each tuned its software to align with its unique vehicle characteristics. The common hardware stands out. Both use six clutch packs and four planetary gear sets. Internal variations extend beyond software. Ford employs unique valve body setups based on shifter design, whereas GM uses magnetic manual valves that prove challenging to remanufacture. Although both are sealed-for-life units, Ford's 10-speed allows serviceable internal filters, unlike GM's separator plate, which risks damage during filter removal. Pump assemblies in the front covers vary too: GM opts for helical gears to reduce noise, while Ford sticks with straight-cut gears.

Fluid requirements differ and are not cross-compatible - Ford demands Mercon ULV, GM specifies Dexron ULV. During The Autopian's probe into GM's 2025 recall, Ford clarified that the transmissions are not the same, pointing to unique software, hydraulic controls, and the absence of GM's problematic latch ball valve in its design.

Common Failures in Ford and GM 10-Speed Transmissions

Ford's 10R80 faced issues right from its 2017 launch. The main grievance involves the CDF drum - a spinning component enclosing the C, D, and F clutches. If the internal bushing misaligns, it ruins a Teflon seal, allowing fluid leakage that causes rough jolts, neutral drop-outs, and shudders on cold starts.

Ford responded with a revised CDF drum, adding a retaining lip for the bushing and anodizing the aluminum housing to resist wear from clutches. A 2023 recall fixed loose internal bolts that hindered park function, posing rollaway dangers. Another recall in March 2025 addressed unintended shifts in neutral and reverse. By early 2026, NHTSA escalated a probe into about 1.3 million F-150s for erratic downshifts.

GM's 10L80 follows a parallel path. Silverado, Sierra, Tahoe, and Escalade owners note shuddering, abrupt shifts, hunting for gears, and overheating. A November 2024 recall hit over 461,000 diesel trucks and SUVs for lockup problems, hinting at broader issues than first admitted.

An April 2026 class-action suit claims the 10L80 triggers brief wheel lockups during downshifts from valve body crosslinks, with an NHTSA recall in March 2025 affecting over 90,000 equipped vehicles. Though sharing architecture and potential weaknesses, neither transmission is deemed inferior. The manufacturer badge matters little in reliability.
