Chrysler launches fourth recall for Jeep Cherokee power transfer units that risk power loss or rolling away.

May 12, 2026 - For the fourth time, Chrysler has announced a Jeep Cherokee power transfer unit recall, impacting more than 61,000 vehicles.

The recall targets 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokee models equipped with power transfer units vulnerable to failure.

A failing power transfer unit in a Jeep Cherokee can cause the vehicle to lose drive power or roll away even when shifted into PARK.

In June 2020, Chrysler recalled 2014-2017 Jeep Cherokees over power transfer unit input spline failures. A similar issue prompted another recall in April 2023.

FCA fielded questions from safety regulators in Canada, the U.S., and various international agencies about transfer case troubles in multiple Jeep Cherokee model years.

In January 2025, FCA issued a recall for 2017-2019 Jeep Cherokees with power transfer units prone to damage that could disconnect transmissions and differentials. Engineers pinpointed improperly seated snap rings as the culprit, leading to power loss or unintended movement when parked.

Challenges continued, as a January 2026 probe into 2019-2023 Jeep Cherokees uncovered one crash, one injury, 387 warranty claims, and numerous other complaints.

Owners may detect issues through a Service 4WD warning light, strange noises, vibrations, or shifts in driving feel.

Chrysler is finalizing repair procedures, with initial recall notices set to mail starting June 25, 2026. Dealer-ready final letters will follow later.
