The phrase 'if you can't beat them, join them' perfectly describes the 2026 automotive sector. China's powerhouse status has prompted veteran manufacturers to align with its leaders. Stellantis, managing 14 brands under one roof, is teaming up with Dongfeng to produce four fresh models for domestic Chinese sales and international exports.

Stellantis has finalized an agreement with Dongfeng for a total investment of eight billion Chinese Yuan - equivalent to €1 billion or $1.16 billion. Dongfeng handles the bulk of the funding, with Stellantis providing roughly €130 million ($151 million). This capital will support the rollout of two Jeep models and two Peugeot models, debuting in 2027.

Production will occur at the Wuhan facility operated by the Dongfeng Peugeot Citroën Automobile (DPCA) joint venture. Yes, that very Wuhan. The lineup qualifies as new energy vehicles (NEVs), encompassing plug-in hybrids, battery electrics, and extended-range models where a gas engine generates power for the battery.

Stellantis offers few specifics on the incoming Jeeps beyond their off-road emphasis. For Peugeot, the duo draws inspiration from the bold wagon and SUV concepts revealed at last month's Beijing Auto Show. The Concept 6 and Concept 8 showcase a bold new aesthetic tailored for China, now poised for worldwide debut in 2027.

Though Stellantis formed just five years ago, its French operations have partnered with state-backed Dongfeng for 34 years since PSA Peugeot Citroën launched the joint venture in 1992. These four models represent one facet of expanded collaboration, sealed by a non-binding strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU).

A recent Bloomberg article suggested Stellantis might let Dongfeng utilize idle European plants, with reciprocal access in China. That vision is now reality, at least on the Chinese front.

Our Take: It's premature to assess how much authentic Jeep and Peugeot character these China-built vehicles will retain. Given Dongfeng's dominant financial role, expect designs optimized for Chinese tastes yet crafted with broader appeal. The word 'initially' for two models per brand signals potential for future additions.

Stellantis has not disclosed target export regions, but Dongfeng's Qing Yang hails the pact as a 'win-win.' Stellantis CEO Antonio Filosa signals deeper future teamwork: 'We anticipate this initiative and even greater collaboration ahead.'
