Can the GTS Carry You Far From Home?

The Cayenne ranks as the world's top-selling Porsche, and its appeal is clear. Earlier drives of the S and Turbo E-Hybrid models confirmed strong balance and engaging dynamics across the lineup. Still, can it double as a family hauler? Will it keep its place among Edmunds favorites after nearly 1,000 miles in just a few days?

This test car was no ordinary Cayenne meant for school runs or shopping lots. Instead I chose the GTS in Coupe body style with the Lightweight package. It was an unusual pick, yet if even this focused version could handle the miles in comfort, the model's all-around talent would be confirmed.

Power comes from a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 rated at 493 horsepower and 486 lb-ft of torque, routed through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels. It reached 60 mph in 4.1 seconds during instrumented testing, but on the highway passing strength was the real story and it never felt lacking.

Fuel use stood out more than acceleration. The 932.8-mile trip required four fill-ups. The V8 consumed 64.9 gallons of 91-octane fuel, returning 14.4 mpg and a total cost of $436. That is the price of running all eight cylinders.

For comparison, the same route in our Macan EV One-Year Test car covered 907.6 miles at a charging cost of only $107.81. Home charging helped keep that figure low, though public stations would have raised it only slightly.

Despite different platforms and powertrains, both vehicles shared comfort strengths on the long drive. The adaptive sport seats excelled in each, making extended time behind the wheel easy. The cushioning is firm yet the range of adjustments and support rank among the best in any SUV.

Ride quality also impressed over the full distance. The Macan EV result was expected, but the Cayenne surprised me by staying composed. It absorbed most bumps smoothly, and occasional sharp hits never spoiled the journey. The GTS's inherent versatility, already noted in earlier comparison tests, remained a standout feature.

National Market Price

The Cayenne also feels more solidly assembled and upscale than the Macan we tested. That model's cabin did not match its near-$100,000 price. The GTS here starts at $178,820, yet the quality justifies much of the cost. Panels fit tightly, rich materials appear throughout, and the houndstooth seat inserts add welcome contrast to the usual GTS gray-and-black scheme.

Cabin quietness is a weaker point. Even with acoustic glass the road roar from the 22-inch Pirelli P Zero Corsa tires stayed noticeable. Wind rush was well controlled, but the constant tire noise prevented true relaxation. The sport exhaust added another issue.

While thrilling at full throttle, the exhaust note drones at 2,000 rpm during steady 75-mph cruising. Switching to a milder mode helps, yet the sound remains present. Long highway stretches make that background note tiring, especially over eight-hour days.

The steering wheel proved the biggest unexpected flaw. Beneath the Alcantara wrap the rim feels unusually firm. Resting an elbow on the sill and steering with two fingers eventually left my hand sore. This trait never appeared in the Macan and, while minor, it is the first time a road trip left me with tender fingers.

So is the Cayenne GTS Coupe with Lightweight package a good road-trip choice? Probably not. The test confirmed that Porsche's model-specific tuning goes deeper than the brochure suggests. A standard Cayenne S or the Turbo E-Hybrid would likely prove more comfortable over 1,000 miles.

The GTS shines for daily use and occasional spirited drives, and it can even handle track days. For extended highway travel, however, another Cayenne variant would serve better. Fortunately, many strong options exist.
