It's surprising that Audi has taken this long to introduce a genuine full-size SUV. Mercedes-Benz has had the GLS available for two decades, while BMW launched the X7 back in 2019. Audi tends to move at a deliberate pace, but the Q9 has arrived at last - and it makes quite an impression as a full-size model.

Earlier this year we got a look at the cabin. Now the full exterior details are out. Buyers will get two versions: the regular Q9 and the more athletic SQ9.

Audi's First Full-Size SUV

The Q9 is undeniably large. Its 123.5-inch wheelbase exceeds that of a Chevy Tahoe. Overall length favors the Tahoe, yet Audi tucks the front and rear more tightly.

This is the biggest Audi yet. Open the doors and you find three rows with seating for six or seven. The six-seat layout with second-row captain's chairs is the one to choose; those thrones are very comfortable. Adults heading to the third row will still have decent space.

Outside, the styling echoes the updated Q7 but on a larger scale. Wheel choices start at 21 inches and rise to optional 22- and 23-inch sizes.

Despite the size, the brakes are substantial. Behind those wheels sit 15.7-inch front rotors with six-piston calipers and 13.8-inch rear rotors with single-piston units.

Power comes from a twin-turbo 2.9-liter V6, the same basic engine once used in the prior RS5. It produces 429 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque, with peak torque available from 2,000 rpm to 4,500 rpm.

Audi claims a 0-60 mph time of 4.9 seconds. The V6 pairs with an eight-speed automatic and quattro all-wheel drive.

Smart Lighting Tech

Audi has long led in lighting technology, from the R8's daytime running lights to laser systems and now adaptive Digital Matrix LEDs. The brand's latest adaptive lights finally reach the U.S. market.

The Digital Matrix LED setup is said to be smarter than prior laser lighting. The effect is similar: full brightness without dazzling others or the driver.

The system detects objects and reduces light directed at them. It also spots reflective metal signs so glare does not bounce back into the driver's eyes.

Beyond the headlights, Audi offers advanced OLED taillights with thousands of micro LEDs. These let the rear lighting adapt its shape to the vehicle.

The turn signals project an arrow onto the ground when activated, giving extra warning to nearby traffic and pedestrians. This feature is optional with the upgraded lighting package.

The 2027 Q9 starts at $89,095. Options such as an illuminated panoramic roof, advanced lighting, and second-row captain's chairs can raise the price. Even the base model includes a panoramic roof, Bang and Olufsen audio, and upgraded wood and metal trim instead of piano black.

More Power: The Audi SQ9

Audi is also launching the SQ9 alongside the standard model. It includes the lighting upgrades as standard and brings a stronger powertrain.

The SQ9 uses the twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 from the pre-facelift RS6 Avant, delivering 591 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. An upgraded eight-speed transmission sends power to all four wheels.

Audi lists a 0-60 mph time of 3.8 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. The SQ9 rides on staggered tires: 285-section fronts and 305-section rears on 22-inch wheels. Optional 23-inch wheels with summer tires widen the rears to 315.

Brakes grow to 16.5-inch front rotors with six-piston calipers. Quattro tuning favors the rear, and a locking rear differential is fitted. Air suspension with adaptive damping is standard. The SQ9 weighs 5,556 pounds yet feels ready for spirited driving.

The 2027 Audi SQ9 starts at $119,395, with deliveries expected in the fourth quarter of 2026.

Motor1's Take: The Q9 cabin already impressed us, and the lighting technology plus powertrain options add further appeal. Audi may have entered the full-size segment later than rivals, but the Q9 and SQ9 look set to attract buyers. When asked about a possible RSQ9, the reply was simply "No comment." Interesting.
