Hyundai Motor America has advised owners of 94,622 Genesis sedans to park their cars outdoors and clear of garages, structures, and other vehicles until engineers complete a remedy for a possible fire risk.

The recall involves certain 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans along with 2017-2020 Genesis G80 models that feature non-memory power-seat assemblies. A damaged switch may allow the seat motor to continue operating after the driver exits the vehicle.

Which Genesis And G80 Model Years

NHTSA recall number 26V664000 divides the vehicles into two groups: 54,644 units from the 2015-2016 Hyundai Genesis sedans and 39,978 units from the 2017-2020 G80 sedans, totaling 94,622 vehicles. Hyundai submitted the documents on October 8.

Owners may now verify their vehicle identification number via NHTSA's online lookup tool, which became available on October 13. The tool is located on NHTSA's primary recall page under the Recalls section and accepts the 17-character VIN.

Prior campaigns for this Genesis generation covered separate electrical issues linked to the anti-lock braking system and starter, forming part of broader recall activity Hyundai has managed in 2026.

Hyundai has confirmed one fire and one additional thermal incident tied to the defect, with no crashes or injuries reported. The repair remains in development.

How A Stuck Seat Switch Can Start A Fire

The issue stems from the front power-seat control switch. When dislodged or damaged, the switch can remain engaged even after the ignition is turned off and the driver has departed.

With the switch locked in place, the seat-adjustment motor runs without stopping. The ongoing electrical demand can cause the motor to overheat and create a fire risk.

Hyundai recommends that owners monitor for a burning smell near the seat area and verify whether the seat-control switches function as expected.

Any such indication requires moving the vehicle away from buildings right away and reaching out to a Genesis or Hyundai dealer for further instructions.

This type of failure mirrors issues noted by regulators in other seat-motor fire recalls across the industry and aligns with a broader series of park-outside advisories issued for fire risks affecting millions of vehicles in the United States this year.

Hyundai is advising affected owners to park their vehicles outdoors and away from buildings, garages, and other vehicles until repairs can be completed, the automaker stated in its recall notice. Without a confirmed schedule, the guidance remains in effect until a fix is ready.
