Discussing the Honda S2000 legend brings up familiar enthusiast highlights. The 9000-rpm redline stood as a record for naturally aspirated engines until Ferrari surpassed it more than a decade later. Additional highlights include the F1-style gauge layout, the focused driver cockpit, and the carbon-reinforced cylinder liners. Talk often turns to the AP1 versus AP2 discussion, with terms like raw and analog entering the mix.

Yet one standout feature remains the manual shifter, long praised as among the finest in any production road car. Our earlier S2000 review noted how gear changes feel crisp, metallic, and rewarding in a manner few rivals achieve. The short throws combine light-switch precision with solid weight, evoking the feel of a bolt-action rifle. The reasons behind this six-speed excellence lie in compact metal linkages and a company culture that prioritized such details.

Direct metal linkage design

Honda developed this transmission from scratch for the S2000 rather than adapting an existing unit. The shift linkage mounts directly atop the transmission housing, placing it close to the driver. Road and Track called it essentially a straight rod into the gearbox, offering the purest possible connection. The result is minimal travel, little free play, and excellent feedback. Even in neutral, a well-maintained S2000 shifter shows almost no movement when tested with two fingers. Metal rods replace the cables used in the original NSX and most later Honda manuals, delivering a firmer shift action.

Internal shafts, synchros, and layout

The aluminum-alloy shift lever rides in a rubber mount that dampens vibration, per Honda's original press materials. This metal construction creates much of the character while the slight compliance prevents an overly harsh feel in a street car. Parallel shafts joined at the output end, drawn from Honda front-drive designs, reduce synchro load by as much as 40 percent and thereby lower shift effort. Double-cone synchros serve first, third, and fourth gears, while second gear uses a triple-cone setup to increase friction surface and speed synchronization. The compact cockpit layout also places the lever within easy reach of the steering wheel, satisfying a key test for driver-focused cars.

The corporate focus behind the quality

The simple answer is that Honda has long emphasized shift quality. When asked by Road and Track, the Civic Type R chief engineer noted that shift feel has remained a priority. Even the 1965 S800 roadster, an early spiritual predecessor, featured an excellent shifter, as have nearly all Honda manuals since. Because Honda engines rarely produce extreme torque, the accompanying transmissions can use lighter-duty components that allow finer internal tuning and superior shift action. In the end, the S2000 shifter earned its following through metal linkages, multiple synchro cones, and consistent engineering choices, yet the clearest reason is that Honda set out to create exactly that level of precision.
