The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV earns recognition as Australia’s leading electrified ute in the 2026 CarExpert Choice Awards, claiming the prize for the second straight year.

It outperformed two other contenders: the BYD Shark 6 plug-in hybrid ute and the pure-electric KGM Musso EV dual-cab model.

Although the BYD Shark 6 now features a stronger turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder PHEV setup with a 3500kg braked towing rating matching the GWM, our selections occurred before the Performance flagship arrived.

Even so, the GWM distinguishes itself through its mechanical four-wheel drive setup with up to three differential locks, making it ideal for demanding off-road use.

Beyond its trail capability, it shines in city driving with a smooth, SUV-style ride that pairs well with its upscale, SUV-like cabin. A glance at the Cannon Alpha PHEV interior often prompts the question: "This is a ute?!"

Power delivery feels robust, delivering combined system figures of 300kW and 750Nm, while the sizable 37.1kWh battery supports 115km of electric-only driving, though it requires the spare wheel to sit in the tub.

Value stands out as well, with the Cannon Alpha PHEV starting at $57,490 drive-away, and occasional promotions can lower the effective cost further.

The Cannon Alpha PHEV provides the strongest overall package of affordability, off-road strength, and everyday comfort among current electrified utes, which is why it earns our selection.
