Utility vehicles continue to sell strongly across Australia where diesel engines have traditionally led sales. Yet the segment is shifting fast as hybrid plug-in hybrid and electric models now give buyers fresh options to lower fuel costs.

Electrified utes remain fewer than conventional models but competition has increased since last year. Despite this the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV has again taken the top spot earning Best Electrified Ute in the 2026 CarExpert Choice Awards.

This marks the second year running that the Cannon Alpha PHEV has claimed the award after edging out the KGM Musso EV. It also surpassed the BYD Shark 6 which added a lower-priced cab chassis version and a stronger 2.0-litre Performance model after voting closed.

The Cannon Alpha PHEV joined the Australian market in 2025 alongside diesel variants in the GWM flagship ute lineup. The Lux PHEV is offered at 57490 dollars drive-away while the Ultra PHEV carries a 64490 dollar drive-away price.

The PHEV pairs a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor a nine-speed automatic and a 37.1 kWh battery delivering combined outputs of 300 kW and 750 Nm.

These figures support a claimed 115 km of electric-only range on the NEDC cycle along with combined fuel use of just 1.7 L per 100 km.

Beyond efficiency the Cannon Alpha PHEV keeps a 3500 kg braked towing rating genuine 4x4 ability with low-range gearing and robust off-road equipment including locking differentials.

The model also delivers a smooth SUV-style ride and a refined cabin. The top Ultra PHEV adds premium touches such as Nappa leather trim plus heated ventilated and massaging front seats items rarely seen in Australian utes.

Overall the Cannon Alpha PHEV handles daily drives on electric power while retaining the towing touring and off-road capability expected by many dual-cab buyers.

Even as more electrified utes arrive the Cannon Alpha PHEV stands apart through its balance of value range and equipment.

The GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV blends the capability traditional ute buyers want with the comfort and technology offered by rivals plus around 100 km of real-world zero-emissions range.
