Racing continues to gain fans across the country, yet many established venues have not shared in that growth. A wave of historic tracks has shut down or faced redevelopment pressures in recent years, often due to high operating costs. In contrast, the SRCA Dragstrip in Great Bend, Kansas, completed a major overhaul and reopened just weeks ago, offering a positive example for preservation efforts even as closures mount elsewhere.

The facility earned its place in history by hosting the first NHRA Nationals back in 1955, two years after it first opened. A 2023 inspection revealed serious surface issues that forced a temporary shutdown, according to local reports. City leaders stepped in to fund a 5.9 million dollar project that delivered a fresh racing surface along with an updated timing tower, allowing the strip to return to service.

Further north in Michigan, the IHRA stepped forward to acquire Milan Dragway as part of a larger 2025 deal involving seven locations. The track, which dates to the 1960s, had already become the main drag racing site for the Detroit region after an earlier venue closed. Now operating as Darana Dragway, it has received new pavement, seating, and improved facilities for spectators.

Tracks Face Noise Disputes, Budget Shortfalls, or Development Pressures

Another Michigan site has not been as fortunate. Onondaga Raceway, a modest eighth-mile strip that began operations in the early 1960s, has dealt with repeated complaints from nearby residents over sound levels. Despite the track predating most surrounding homes, legal challenges have led to repeated shutdowns and reopenings. The venue currently remains closed while awaiting the outcome of its latest appeal.

The situation prompted Michigan lawmakers to pass the Right to Race act earlier this year, shielding established tracks from nuisance lawsuits. Similar protections now exist in states such as Iowa, North Carolina, and Kansas to help longtime racing facilities stay open.

When neighbor conflicts are not the main issue, financial offers for the large parcels of land around tracks can prove difficult to refuse. Developers often target these sites for housing projects or large data centers, and struggling venues may view such proposals as an exit from mounting expenses.
